Location
Situated on the Wine Route in the Vosges foothills, Saint-Hippolyte - Sankt Pilt - became a walled and moated "town" in the 14th century. The monastery, founded in the 8th century by Saint Fulrad, abbot of Saint Denis and archichapelain of Charlemagne, gradually became a village, lorded by the Dukes of Lorraine until 1766. It was then that Saint-Hippolyte became French - and Alsatian.
The "Rouge de Saint Hippolyte", a pinot noir more "red" than the one vinified in the surrounding area, has made its reputation.
