Viareggio Carnival
The tradition of the parade of floats (first gigs) in Viareggio dates back to 1873[2] and the idea of a parade on Shrove Tuesday in 1873 was born at the tables of the Caffè del Casino, inaugurated forty years earlier.[ 2] At the end of the century, triumphal chariots appeared, true monuments, built of wood, scagliola and jute, modeled by sculptors and put together by carpenters and blacksmiths who, in the Darsena, on the docks of the shipyards, knew how to create extraordinary boats.
The First World War led to a war pause that lasted six years. The event resumed in 1921 and the floats paraded along the two seaside avenues.
In 1921 the first official song was sung, known as the ''coppa di Champagne'', the current Carnival anthem, composed by the musician Icilio Sadun with words by Lelio Maffei. That year for the first time, even the floats came alive with the sound of music, because the band found a place on board the construction entitled "the wedding of Tonin di Burio" by Guido Baroni, which represented the wedding party in the threshing floor of a farmhouse. Two years later the Pierrot chariot was the first mask to move its head and eyes. In 1925 the painter Antonio D'arliano invented the paper tracing technique, which has since allowed colossal constructions. In 1930 Uberto Bonetti created Burlamacco: the mask symbol of Viareggio, which, in the 1931 poster, appeared in the company of Ondina, the bather symbol of the summer season. From the beginning (1954), the newly formed Rai first, and then Eurovision (1958), have consecrated the great event, transporting Viareggio and the Carnival everywhere, via the airwaves.
On 20 February 1971 the first Darsena neighborhood carnival took place[3].
Today the Viareggio Carnival is an internationally renowned event. Every year the Masked Courses, i.e. the parades of allegorical floats, take place in the period between the end of January and the beginning of March and many spectators participate. Since 1994 the celebrations have been extended to the first Sunday of Lent, according to the ancient Lucca tradition of Tabernella.
Papier-mâché[edit | edit wikitext]
Papier-mâché is a preparation essentially composed of water, glue, plaster and paper; the manufacturing process starts from the creation of a clay model. By casting plaster on this model, the negative of the cast is obtained, inside which the paper strips that have previously been soaked in a mixture of water and glue are applied. Thanks to this material, tank drivers are able to shape very large masses and volumes and, thanks to the lightness of the empty shapes, the tank is a spectacular self-propelled structure. The strips are then adhered to the cast, which then needs many hours to dry.
The papier-mâché work is then removed and, after smoothing it with sandpaper, the decoration is carried out with acrylic or tempera colours, which are covered with a further protective glossy varnish. The first papier-mâché float was made in Viareggio in 1925: "the knights of the Carnival" by Antonio D'arliano. Currently one of the great recognized masters of papier-mâché is Arnaldo Galli who, together with his brother Renato and Silvano Avanzini, collaborated in the construction of props in Federico Fellini films such as Casanova and Boccaccio '70, building an Anita Ekberg of enormous dimensions. Papier-mâché masks by the masters of Viareggio were the setting for the opening ceremony of the Italia '90 World Cup and the closing ceremony of the 20th Winter Olympic Games.
The Citadel[edit | edit wikitext]
The same topic in detail: Viareggio Carnival Citadel.
The Carnival Citadel is the largest theme park in Europe dedicated to masks. It is located in the north of the city. The 16 hangars within which the floats and masquerades are built overlook the large elliptical square named after Burlamacco. It was inaugurated on 15 December 2001 according to the project by Francesco Tomassi.
In 2017, the "Espace Gilbert" exhibition space was inaugurated in which elements of the great floats of the past are exhibited. In 2019, the ground floor of the new layout of the Carnival Museum was inaugurated. Through artistic testimonies from 1500 to 1873, the "upside down world" typical of Carnival celebrations in Europe is told. The first floor instead tells the story of the Viareggio Carnival through a selection of original models and sketches. In Cittadella there are also papier-mâché workshops where children and adults can learn the techniques of processing.
In summer 2020, the graphic project of gigantic murals on the doors of the float hangars was created, signed by the architect Paolo Riani and created by Ati, the temporary association of five artisan companies of the Viareggio Carnival. A complete transformation of Piazza Burlamacco, at the center of the Citadel, which identifies itself even more in the agora of art, through a large temporary exhibit, to be admired only "here" and "now", precisely in the sense of the spirit of Carnival. A large open-air exhibition with sixteen details of the posters

Viareggio football tournament for young people After the birth of the Young Footballers Center on 20 November 1947, president Torquato Bresciani developed the idea of an international tournament limited to youth teams:[1] a dress rehearsal took place already in February 1948 with the participation of city bars.[1] The first official edition therefore took place in 1949, taking place from the Monday following the first Sunday of Carnival to the Monday following the third Sunday of the same Festival:[1] the name chosen was the Carnival Cup, while the trophy up for grabs reproduced Burlamacco, official mask of the Viareggio tradition.[1]
Over the following years the event, reserved for the Primavera teams of some Italian and foreign teams, took on more and more international importance:[4][5] Partizan was the first foreign club to win the tournament, in 1951,[4 ] while Dukla Prague won six editions between 1964 and 1980.[5] At the beginning of the new millennium the event, which in the meantime had come to involve 48 participants in a single edition, changed its name to Viareggio Cup World Football Tournament.[4]
However, the change of name coincided with a progressive decline of the tournament,[4][5] also caused by the birth in 2013 of the UEFA Youth League, the football competition organized by UEFA which pits the Under-19 teams of the best European teams against each other .[4] During the years 2010 and 2020 the three main titled teams of the Viareggio tournament, Milan, Juventus and Inter, who until then had been regular protagonists, gave up taking part in some editions.[5] In 2019 the tournament saw the birth of a version aimed at the Primavera teams of some Italian and foreign women's clubs.[6] In 2020 and 2021 the event reserved for men's clubs was not held due to the Covid-19 pandemic,[7] while in 2022 it was reserved for Under-18 teams.[8] From 2023 the tournament saw the return of the Primavera teams.
