Surprising, friendly and engaging, Brussels offers a multitude of different facets. Walking along its narrow streets and squares, it is not uncommon to have the feeling of being in a provincial town, but this feeling is quickly contradicted by the appearance of a superb monument that reminds us that Brussels is really a great European capital.

History has retained 979 as the birth year of Brussels, but many vestiges indicate that the places and surroundings have been occupied since the Roman era, and even earlier. Having become a capital city under the Dukes of Burgundy, the city soon experienced many covetousness : Spaniards, Austrians, Frenchmen and Dutchmen wanted to put it on or keep it in their fold and it was only in 1830 that it acquired, with Belgium, its independence. A little more than a century later, Brussels reinforced its international reputation by welcoming, in 1958, the main European institutions.

From this eventful history, Brussels has preserved many buildings that delight the walker. Start your visit by the Grand Place. You will discover the town hall, a jewel of the flamboyant Gothic art of the 15th century, the house of the King, superb neo-Gothic building which houses the city museum and many houses with sumptuous facades. Next to the Grand Place, you can admire the world's most famous boy, the Manneken-Pis. Then visit the Sacré Isle, a maze of streets and alleys that are listed as Unesco World Heritage, which houses beautiful buildings (Madeleine Church, Toone Theater...) and many restaurants. To taste the local specialties, the brasserie Aux Armes de Bruxelles is a sure bet. On the menu : oysters, mussels, waterzooï, carbonnade, vol-au-vent, waffle, flambé crêpes...

But you still have a lot of monuments and sites to discover : the Bourse, the Royal Theater of La Monnaie, the Bellone house, the Saint-Michel-et-Sainte-Gudule cathedral, the Grand-Sablon square, Palais de Justice, Place Royale, the Atomium which, with the Grand Place and the Manneken Pis, is one of the emblems of the city. As for the museum, the Brussels offer is impressive. The main attractions are the Royal Museums of Fine Arts (Flemish Primitives, 17th and 18th century paintings, modern art), MMM (Musée Magritte Muséum), which is exclusively reserved for the work of Magritte, the Belgian Center for the Band Designed, the museum of musical instruments...
