A medieval city in the south of the Ardèche, Joyeuse takes its name from Charlemagne's famous sword, nicknamed "La Joyeuse". Ancient silk capital, the old town of Joyeuse overlooks the gorges of the Baume River from its hill. Its heart of a village is really worth a visit: typical of the Ardèche cities, Joyeuse is built around its medieval heart. Its cobbled streets, its small shops, its Saint-Pierre church, its silkworm nurseries and its old buildings give it an incredible charm. Take the time to stroll through its vaults, 17th century hotels, small stone shops and cafés, and finally settle on the terrace to admire the remains of the Tour de la Recluse. If there is one emblematic site of Joyeuse, it is its castle: built during the 16th century, this imposing building is one of the city's listed monuments. With its Renaissance style, recognizable by its vaulted arches, this castle now houses the town hall of the town. From stairs to paved passages, do not miss the portal of the Cardinal of Joyeuse, the Hôtel de Montravel (18th century), and the Musée de la Châtaigneraie housed in a former convent.

The chestnut is one of the jewels of local gastronomy. The Joyeuse market, where you will have the opportunity to taste many chestnut-based specialities, is the most important in the whole department. Every Wednesday, on the market stalls, you can discover a veritable whirlwind of enticing smells: here, there is a wealth of delicatessen, wines, cheeses, meats and potato preparations! Caillette, grass sausages, cousina (chestnut soup), pork with cévennes, cucumber, asparagus, olives, walnuts, but also blueberries, clafoutis, peaches, picodon, goudoulet, marrons glacés, wines from the Ardèche hills, chestnut beers and puddings will delight the most gourmet.

Surrounded by limestone plateaus and the Cévennes mountains, Joyeuse enjoys a particularly pleasant Mediterranean climate, which is ideal for hiking. The "Balcon du Freyssinet" hike (6.8 kilometres), the "Petit tour sur les Gras de Perret" (9 kilometres) or the groundwater and megalithic hike (11 kilometres) are all perfect routes for all levels of walking, which will allow you to discover Joyeuse and its surroundings as you should.

The river La Baume is ideal for refreshing walks, but also for water sports. Canoeing and kayaking are two of the most popular activities for holidaymakers: from Joyeuse to the Gorges de la Baume, via the Tétines de Vernon, the Cascade and the Grotte de Beaumicou, you can contemplate from the water some of the most beautiful panoramas of Joyeuse and its surroundings. You can also paddle to the bed of the Ardèche, a paradise for sliding sports ranging from hydrospeed to water skiing, caving, diving, rafting and canyoning. Those who love sensations and other photography aficionados will gladly visit the magnificent village of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, known for its gorges of the Ardèche and its famous arch above the watercourse. Finally, families will probably prefer the calm of the Baume to bathe during the hot summer months: from the supervised beach of Le Petit Rocher, parents and children can enjoy long breaks of swimming and idleness under the joyful sun.

Joyeuse is a very beautiful city with very friendly people and shops! The restaurants are top! There are many markets around! I recommend you the market of Les Vans, Ruoms and of course the one of Joyeuse! For canoeing, I recommend Les Assions: it is much less crowded than in Vallon! Finally you have to go and visit Balazuc : it's magnificent...
