Looking for history, beautiful heritage, escape and discovery in a preserved setting? Direction the village of Largentière, in the heart of the Ardèche.

The second smallest sub-prefecture in France, the magnificent medieval city of Argentière takes its name from its former silver lead mines. Located in the south of the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park, in the Ligne valley, this welcoming medieval city with its charm seduces its visitors every year thanks to its beautiful houses along the river. Take the time to walk along its historic streets dotted with period residences: around a passage, or a small calade street, you can cross the road to the Renaissance town hall, but also the Palace of Justice, its superb castle of the Bishops or the church of Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers dating back to the 13th century. Admire the beautiful houses with their high sandstone facades, but also the splendid mullioned windows, arches and vaults that make this city of character so unique. The magnificent Porte des Récollets, which gives access to the heart of the old town, Montée Mazon, the old court, the Caritat mill, the Jossouin hotel, those of Rochier or Vinezac, the Pont des Récollets, the Notre-Dame convent, the Tour de l'Horloge, the Roseraie de Berty and the remains of the old city walls should also be added to your visit list. With the family? It is definitely a must in Largentière, which you will have to discover: its castle. Formerly owned by the Bishop of Viviers, it was in turn a castle, a court and then a prison before becoming a hospital. Dominating the entire city with its 12th century square keep (called the Bastide of Bonnegarde), its reception and exhibition halls, it attracts many visitors, especially during the summer period during historical reenactments and knights' shows.

Several hiking trails also criss-cross the city and its surroundings, allowing you to discover Largentière perfectly, such as the "Randoland" treasure hunt for children aged 4-12, as well as the "Tour du Tanargue", one of the most popular GR in the area. For larger excursions, a few nearby sites are really worth it (really!) the detour, like the wonderful Gorges de l'Ardèche and Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, a major canoeing and hiking spot only 20 kilometres away, or the mythical Grotte Chauvet (18.5 kilometres away), the amazing and magical Aven d'Orgnac (27 kilometres away), or cities like Aubenas, the caves of La Salamandre and La Cocalière... In short, you will have understood it, impossible to get bored during your holidays in Largentière !
