A charming village made up of old houses recognizable by their blond stones, Vagnas has several hamlets scattered around its village. Its picturesque heart is centred mainly around the Place Urbain-Thévenon, where beautiful 14th century houses have been carefully preserved. As for the historical monuments, the castle of the Priors (former lords of Vagnas), the relics of the surrounding wall (south of the village), the wells, as well as the many fountains scattered throughout the territory of the municipality are worth seeing. The ruins of the Monastery, in particular, are not to be missed: a former priory established at the very end of the 9th century, it was in turn a Gallo-Roman sanctuary, a Visigoth, a church, then a priory before finally being abandoned. Its stones were used to build the oldest houses in the village, which is why it is now in ruins. During your excursions to Vagnas, you will certainly cross the path of the Plantée Stone (a milestone on the Roman road), the monks' washhouse located on a spring that once fed the hamlet of Monastier, the dolmen of Champagnac (east of Vagnas), as well as the many bridges that cross the Rieusset. There are many hiking routes that cross the town and its hamlets, and which will allow you to discover the smallest treasures, both historical and natural.

But if Vagnas is worth a visit, it is also thanks to its ideal location to discover some of the most beautiful treasures of the southern Ardèche. Within a radius of about thirty kilometres, there are many emblematic sites, which we strongly recommend that you visit with your family. The Grotte de la Cocalière, the great site of the Aven d'Orgnac, the historic and magnificent Grotte Chauvet 2, as well as the Grotte de Saint-Marcel are really worth a visit. After these rather cultural visits, what would you say to an adventure in the Gorges de l'Ardèche? Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and its famous natural arch spanning the Ardèche (the Pont d'Arc) are absolutely worth seeing.
