At the gates of the Ardèche gorges, in a magnificent natural setting, is the commune of Vallon Pont d'Arc. Highly touristic destination in summer season, Vallon Pont d'Arc attracts holidaymakers in search of sports holidays and more particularly lovers of nautical activities or hiking through the reliefs which border the banks of the Gorges de l'Ardèche.
Ideally located at the entrance of the Gorges de l'Ardèche Nature Reserve, the small village of Vallon Pont d'Arc is a peaceful out of season destination, which sees its population increase tenfold during the summer. The reason for this success ? The splendour of its nature and surroundings, of course. The wonderful setting of the Gorges de l'Ardèche, the famous Pont d'Arc (this natural arch over 60 meters high starting point for the descent of the gorges), but also the numerous caves and caverns dating from prehistory make Vallon Pont d'Arc a popular destination. First of all, take the time to visit the town of Vallon Pont d'Arc : stroll through its old streets, in the alleys of its markets, and take the time for a café on the terrace to enjoy the city and its enchanting setting before leaving to discover the historical treasures of the region : its caves. The Gorges de l'Ardèche are indeed home to several dozen decorated caves, among which is the famous Chauvet cave : a mecca of prehistory, it was discovered in Vallon Pont d'Arc in 1994. Known to shelter hundreds of rock paintings, it cannot be visited to be preserved as it is, but you can still visit its reproduction, the Cave of the Bridge of Arc: during this visit, it is a real leap back in time that awaits you, to go back to the origins of man and his art. On the walls of the cave, cave lions, buffalo, horses and hunting scenes will parade before your eyes, certainly astonishing young and old.
As for activities, Vallon Pont d'Arc will conquer the hearts of many holidaymakers. First of all, it is well known that the sun is always there in Ardèche ! And on a hot sunny day, what better way than to take a swim in the river and sunbathe on the beaches bordering the Ardèche ? Take paddle lessons, swim under the Pont d'Arc and enjoy the quiet parentheses at the foot of the cliffs before taking a canoe trip to discover the magnificence of this place of extraordinary beauty. Because if there is a queen activity in Vallon Pont d'Arc, it is canoeing or kayaking. At your own pace, this walk promises beautiful moments of sharing in the hollow of the cliffs for about thirty kilometres, meeting the picturesque villages along the river. Adrenaline lovers ? To your harnesses and combinations for an extraordinary experience : an afternoon of caving to discover the jewels of the underground world, an original activity both sporting and fun, to do with family or friends. For even more excitement, get started in canyoning ! You will have the opportunity to swim in the river, abseil down waterfalls, slide on rocks and dive in breathtaking natural pools. Are you rather fond of climbing ? Along the steep cliff walls, in the hollow of the limestone gorges and the generous green nature, you will enjoy breathtaking views over the gorges and the turquoise of the river. Hiking lovers are also at the right place in Vallon Pont d'Arc, since many routes cross the city and its surroundings, for walks in the heart of nature. Along the Gorges de l'Ardèche scenic route, a total of 11 lookouts have been set up to offer curious walkers breathtaking views of the canyon and its colours. We advise you to go to the "Serre de Tourre", the first belvedere from Vallon Pont d'Arc : perched more than 200 metres above the Ardèche, it will offer you a panorama that you will never forget. With the family, we recommend the Coucouru hike : 7 kilometres long, it will take you along the southern slope of the Coucouru hill through its olive trees and its generous scrubland, for a "green" walk.
Finally, after all these activities, what could be better than a good meal with Ardèche flavours ? Nougat, biscuits, chestnut ice cream, creek, ravioles, local wines, trout, gratin of ravioles, goat cheese or wild boar stew... Where will you start ?
