Looking for nature? Authenticity, tranquility, for a stay far from the crowd? Nestled on the west bank of the Ariège, the town of Rieux-de-Pelleport is the perfect place to put down your bags for a change of scenery. Let's go!
Watered by the streams of Artix and Loubens which flow into the capricious meanders of the Ariège, the commune of Rieux-de-Pelleport is situated at the crossroads of two large agglomerations of the Ariège, namely Foix and Pamiers. A charming and picturesque destination, this old town has a very nice heritage that you must discover during your walks. What to see? Near the Place du Candaillot, the remains of an old medieval castle, but also the imposing church dedicated to Sainte-Madeleine (from the 19th century) and its pleasant park where it is good to stroll will give you a good overview of the village's heritage.
In the Pyrenean foothills, this green paradise is a favourite place for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers: hikers and mountain bikers can have a great time here thanks to a vast network of marked trails for all levels and all tastes. Our advice? On foot or by bike, go to Pamiers in the north or Foix in the south, to discover splendid beaches where you can swim, and a good number of water sports centres along the Ariège! You can go canoeing, kayaking, rafting, and a whole lot of other water activities according to your desires. For families, there are several sites worth visiting in the area, such as the Parc aux Bambous with its labyrinth and flowered parks on the banks of the Hers, or the famous Rivière souterraine de Labouiche. A listed prehistoric site located only 6 kilometres north of Foix and 13 kilometres from Rieux-de-Pelleport, this cave 60 metres underground offers visitors a 1500 metre boat trip, which will take you to the heart of the river, to discover its luminous chambers made up of thousand-year-old stalactites, and its waterfalls, the most magnificent of which is the Salette waterfall, with its astonishing turquoise water. The visit of Foix for its castle, its good small restaurants, but also of the Cave of Niaux (at 30 minutes of road), that of the marvellous medieval bastide of Mirepoix (at 25 kilometers more in the east of Rieux-de-Pelleport), of Pamiers for its inheritance and its softness of living, or that of Saint-Lizier (at 47 kilometers in the west), known to be one of the cities of Ariège with the greatest historical capital, will come to perfect this disorientating stay in Rieux-de-Pelleport.
