In the department of Ariège, in the Occitanie region, Saint-Girons is the capital of the Couserans. Set on the sometimes capricious meanders of the Salat, Saint-Girons is above all an elegant town. Between the mountains and the plains of the Salat valley, Saint-Girons impresses with the astonishing splendour of its architectural heritage, inherited from years of economic prosperity thanks to the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, and the production of flour and textiles by its mills. There is no shortage of tourist sites here, such as the village church. Built during the golden age of the commune in the 19th century, it still has a magnificent 14th century bell tower, carved wooden stalls and a 19th century organ. While strolling through Saint-Girons, the church of Saint-Valier will not fail to catch your eye thanks to its wide 12th century portal, as will the former viscount's castle (and prison) which now houses the town's media library. The old shops and stalls in the heart of the town are also worth a visit, such as the bookstore known for its 1900s decorations, and the pharmacy on Place Aristide Briand, which unveils to its visitors a superb 1927 facade covered with golden mosaics. Pass by the Pont Vieux with its local marble pavements, or by the Champ de Mars for a walk in the shade on the riverside or a detour to the market, just to taste the famous croustade, a Couserans speciality based on fruit and puff pastry, which you will tell us all about!

Saint-Girons is also the perfect place to discover the most beautiful treasures that nature has managed to hide in this region rich in a breathtaking natural heritage. On foot, on horseback, by bike or on donkey back, there are many signposted routes that will allow you to visit the region. The Saint-Girons/Foix greenway by mountain bike, paragliding from the ski resort of Guzet (40 kilometres away), skiing, fishing, canyoning (in Aleu, 18 kilometres away), potholing (in Oust, 16 kilometres away), tree climbing and adventure courses in Moulis, canoeing, kayaking (in Seix, 18 kilometres away), golf in Montardit and mountain activities will complete your stay. Finally, as for the unmissable sites, here is a small list (not exhaustive!) of places to visit during your stay in Saint-Girons: the Ars waterfall in the heart of the Pyrenean chain, 246 metres high (34 kilometres away) is well worth a visit, as is Aulus-les-Bains, a spa town adored by those taking the waters. The glacial valley of Ustou (35 kilometres away) on the heights of the ski resort of Guzet is also worth the detour for its incredible panoramas on one of the most beautiful glacial cirques of the Pyrenees, that of Cagateille. Sporty hikers? Mont Valier (45 kilometres away) is also a must to do! Accessible from a wild and little frequented route from the Col de Pause, this summit spread out between 1551 and 2805 meters will offer you one of the most beautiful panoramas on the Pyrenees chain, on the French side as well as on the Spanish side! The discovery of the Bethmale lake (25 kilometres away) and the ascent of the Pic des Trois Seigneurs (40 kilometres away, the highest point of the Massat canton) will finally give your holidays in Saint-Girons a little taste of adventure!
