Right on the banks of the Rhine, on the border with Germany, Boofzhein has everything, absolutely everything of those Alsatian villages that we love so much.

In the department of Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region, Boofzheim is 35 minutes south of Strasbourg. Rich of a very old history, the commune has seen a parade of Alemannic and Roman tribes, as evidenced by the discovery on its territory of period bronze coins. And if there is indeed a perfect adjective to describe the village, it is "charming". As you enter the heart of the village, you will be seduced by the colourful beauty of its architecture. From the town hall square, you will discover the imposing and splendid Protestant church recognizable by its warm tones bricks and its worked bell tower topped by a beautiful clock. At the foot of the latter, there is a small bakery where you can stock up on pastries and cakes, just to give you strength for the rest of the visit. Rather pretty, this square, built around a roundabout, serves many streets, all decorated with typical houses of the region, with old half-timbered houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, and with colourful facades reminiscent of the most beautiful alleys of Colmar and Strasbourg. Blue, yellow, green, orange, they give a crazy cachet to the town and are certainly one of its most beautiful assets. On the heritage side, the 17th century watermill, its 16th century Renaissance-style church, not forgetting the ruins of the Château de Boofzheim will complete your visit.

The commune and its neighbouring villages can be visited on foot or by bike, so it will be easy for you to discover some historical pearls hidden in the surrounding valleys. There are many castles that dot the region, such as the splendid Ortenbourg Castle, Haut-Andlau Castle, Bernstein Castle, Kintzheim Castle, and Spesbourg Castle, built in 1246 overlooking a wooded valley worthy of the most beautiful postcards. The Abbey of Mont Sainte-Odile, that of Ebersmunster or the astonishing ruins of Niedermunster Abbey will plunge you into the heart of Alsatian stories and legends.

In addition to being the perfect place to learn about hiking, walking or cycling, particularly along the Sentier des Casemates (Casemates Trail) on the remains of the Maginot Line, Boofzheim will win the hearts of boating enthusiasts thanks to its small marina from which you can embark on walks along the canals that water the town and its surroundings, on nearly 320 kilometres of canals in all, notably towards the Rhine. These are all rivers that are also ideal for canoeing and kayaking, and for sporting and contemplative excursions along the water's edge. Would you like to bask in the sun on hot summer days? Head for the Huttenheim lake or the Benfeld lake, just a few steps from Boofzheim. This 8-hectare lake, with its lawn and beach, is the ideal place for a few refreshing swims. Table tennis tables, picnic or volleyball areas and a supervised swimming area in summer will be the icing on the cake of your holiday in the Boofzheim area!
