In the heart of the Camargue, put your suitcases down in the pretty town of Arles. The largest municipality in metropolitan France with its 759 square kilometres, Arles belongs to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. A city of history, you will discover more than a hundred Romanesque and Roman monuments classified as historic monuments: the Roman Amphitheatre, now the city's arenas, the Ancient Theatre, the Roman Baths of Constantine, and the Roman Circus are examples among many others... Listed as a "City and Country of Art and History", many of its monuments are listed as World Heritage Sites. A city of art and culture, famous painters such as Van Gogh and Picasso both spent a few years in Arles, inspired by the beauty of the area. You can also visit many exhibitions dedicated to them.
To the north of the city, do not miss the walk in the limestone mountain range of the Alpilles, where olive trees make the charm of the landscape. In its south, the Camargue: there, you will discover a place where men, horses and birds live together in harmony. An ideal place for a discovery hike, with family or friends. You will discover the local manads, these farms where horses and bulls from the Camargue are bred.
During your walks in the heart of the city, you may come across an Arlesian woman in traditional costume: many festivities and activities of all kinds are organised throughout the year for young and old. In December, it is "Funny Christmas", a street arts festival during which the city offers many shows around the theme of Christmas: circuses, songs, puppets and other story readings will be honored. In April, do not miss the Easter Fair of the city of Arles. This bullfighting festival is a must in the city: Arles vibrates to the rhythm of Spanish music and folklore! Street concerts, bullfights, the atmosphere is traditional and festive.
The International Photography Meetings take place during the summer. As it has been every year since 1969, it is the great meeting place for photo enthusiasts during which you can discover more than forty exhibitions spread throughout the city. For the curious, projections and photography workshops will also be on the agenda.
Those for whom a holiday on the French Riviera rhymes with long periods of idleness under the sun will not be left out: along the 7 kilometres of the beach of Piémanson in a protected natural area, you will fully enjoy the charm of the Mediterranean coast. Swimming, cycling, walking or horse riding, but also quad biking, kites and sand yachts will amaze young and old alike.
Arles is a very pretty town. To do: visit the bullring.
