Explore Poitou Charentes
From the light of the coastline to the darkness of the Romanesque churches, from the serenity of the Poitevin marsh to the liveliness of the Old Port of La Rochelle, Poitou-Charentes has a lot to offer. Land of history and heritage, the region will also seduce you with its rich flavors.
From the bay of Aiguillon to Royan, Poitou-Charentes offers a long maritime facade of 450 kilometers protected by two large heavenly islands: Ré and Oléron. Under a mild and sunny climate, you can enjoy the blue ocean, the iodized air and the large sandy beaches lined with pine trees. In the beautiful coastal resorts or on the islands, water sports enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, sand yachting, surfing, kite surfing, sea kayaking, jet skiing and many other activities. If you prefer to stay on dry land, you can explore the region's many trails on foot, by bike or on horseback and discover its fabulous heritage.
On the coast, several towns are not to be missed. The most famous is undoubtedly La Rochelle which was, until the 15th century, the first French port on the Atlantic. While walking along its arcaded streets, you will discover superb monuments: the medieval towers of the Old Port, the Grosse Horloge gate, the Town Hall. But also take the time to visit the aquarium and the numerous museums of the city. Further south, Royan has the charm of the seaside towns of yesteryear with its beautiful seafront villas and its blue and white striped beach tents. Between these two cities, Rochefort will tell you 350 years of maritime history in its arsenal, this "Versailles of the sea".
Inland, visit Poitiers for its historical center, its palace of the Counts of Poitou and its magnificent Gothic church Notre-Dame-la-Grande. Then go to Niort (dungeon, pillory, churches), to Angoulême (ramparts, Saint-Pierre cathedral, comic book museum), to Saintes (Gallo-Roman arena, Saint-Pierre cathedral, Saint-Eutrope church). But many other places are waiting for you: the peaceful Poitevin marshes, the Futuroscope park, the media Fort Boyard, the island of Aix, the island of Ré with its citadel and its beautiful villages, the island of Oléron... Also take the time, in each of these places, to taste the local specialities: oysters of Marennes-Oléron, mouclade, farci poitevin, tourteau fromager, broyé du Poitou, macarone...
