The village of Chauffour-sur-Vell is located in the department of Corrèze, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. If its name doesn't mean anything to you, this charming village is certainly the place you need for your holidays. Away from the crowds, away from the traditional tourist trails, this green resort enjoys a perfect location for you to discover some of the most beautiful villages in France.
A little-known gem in the south of the Corrèze, Chauffour-sur-Vell is located not far from the Lot department. At the confluence of two streams, the Vell and the Soustre, this village has a very pretty heritage, which you can discover during walking or cycling tours. Typical of the region, the architecture of Chauffour-sur-Vell is remarkable. Its beautiful church with its ornate portal is worth seeing, as is the heart of the village, which still has some beautiful, very tall houses, as well as barns that house old walnut dryers. Walnuts are at the heart of life here; in flour, raw, in oil or in pie, they can be eaten in all sauces, according to your desires. This is why you can find a mill in the village, the Moulin de Niel, a 12th century water mill fed by the Berle fountain, which has been producing flour since 2000.
After taking the time to visit the village, to stroll along its waterways and to be introduced to the local cuisine in one of its restaurants, put on your trainers and get on your bike to discover the rustic charm of the Quercynois causse, studded with a myriad of castles and waterholes where you can refresh yourself during the summer heat. But what to see? Collonges-la-Rouge, 5 kilometres further north, is a must. A village of character in the heart of the Dordogne Valley, classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", Collonges-la-Rouge is known for its old purple sandstone houses, unusual and warm. A historic town, fortified during the Wars of Religion, it is home to a splendid heritage that is a must to discover. Note that its neighbour Meyssac is also worth seeing for the magnificence of its castrum, its Saint-Vincent church and its ramparts. Then head for the neighbouring Lot for some cultural and historical visits, which are sure to put a sparkle in the eyes of young and old alike. The Gouffre de Padirac 25 kilometres further south is a must-do, for the astonishing splendour of its galleries 103 metres underground, as is the perched village of Lacave, famous for its caves and its marvellous panoramas over the Lot Valley. Still to the north of the Regional Natural Park of the Causses du Quercy, Rocamadour is also worth seeing. Situated about thirty minutes drive from Chauffour-sur-Vell, this historic medieval town clinging to its hillside is worth a visit for its sanctuaries, its striking architecture, and for its gastronomy. Pastis Quercynois, but also black truffle, Rocamadour AOP, walnut tart, foie gras, Quercy lamb, saffron, melon and other chips will delight your taste buds.
