Between Sarlat and Montignac, in the Périgord Noir, Archignac is THE relaxing destination par excellence. Between preserved landscapes and historical heritage, this small village full of charm will conquer the heart of lovers of beautiful stones and adventure.

It is in the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, that the small village of Archignac is located. Watered by the Chironde, a sub-tributary of the Vézère, this rural village has origins that go back a long way, since it was occupied as early as the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods. Inhabited by less than 400 inhabitants throughout the year, the village has picturesque ochre limestone houses covered with slate roofs, just like the village church built in the 13th century. Dedicated to Saint-Etienne, it is worth a visit for the beauty of its architecture but also for its decorations and paintings. All around the church, the village of Archignac is made up of old houses, fountains, wash houses, a bread oven and an old chestnut dryer. Our advice? Take the small hiking trails that cross the village to discover the mills, the pigeon houses and the old bories, dry stone huts emblematic of the Périgord Noir, once used by the peasants and farmers of the village between the 16th and 19th centuries.

But staying in Archignac is above all an opportunity to discover some of the most majestic and emblematic sites in France. What to see? The Lascaux cave in Montignac! Discovered in 1940 by 4 teenagers, the Lascaux cave is one of the most important decorated caves of the Upper Paleolithic. If the Dordogne is full of prehistoric sites with no less than 25 decorated caves and 147 deposits, Lascaux is without doubt the most famous and the most impressive! Not far away, you can also discover the Grotte du Pech Blanc, the Grotte de Cro-Bique, the Grottes du Roc de Cazelle or the Gouffre de Proumeyssac! In the area, the Castle of Salignac, the Castle of Commarque, the impressive Castle of Puymartin, the Castle of Belcayre or those of Losse and Rastignac will not fail to delight lovers of history and ancient heritage. The villages of Sarlat-la-Canéda, La Roque-Gageac and Souillac are also worth visiting for their incomparable charm! And don't forget to go for a walk along the Dordogne or on its course in a canoe, and to sit down in one of the restaurants of the region to discover the delights of the flavours of the Périgord Noir: truffles, Bergerac wines, foie gras and other walnut and strawberry delights will make your taste buds travel!
