Ideally located about ten kilometres from the Grotte de Lascaux, the village of Coly (now part of Coly-Saint-Amand) offers a perfect setting for a holiday in the countryside.
In the heart of the Dordogne, Coly is located in the middle of the wooded hills of the Périgord Noir. A few steps from Sarlat, and just next to the famous Lascaux cave, Coly proves to be the ideal place for quiet stays, to discover the splendours of the Dordogne. Watered by the Coly and its tributary the Chironde, Coly is easily accessible for strolling in its bucolic village. Its yellow stone houses, grey stone roofs, dovecotes and picturesque atmosphere give it an incredible charm. Three interpretive trails will allow you to discover the soul of this village: the historical circuit, the nature trail and the playful trail. The first one will take you through the villages of Coly and Saint-Amand, to discover the magnificent fortified abbey that dominates the Perigord residences from its thick surrounding walls. During this walk adapted to children and adults alike, you will discover this 12th century abbey church, as well as the guards' house, the orchards, the truffle field, the presbytery, the Romanesque house, the washhouse and the many panoramas of these "Most Beautiful Villages in France". The nature trail (2.5 kilometres) will lead you through the fragrant flora, junipers and maples that cover the surroundings of Coly. Finally, the playful route will be suitable for children, who, via a one-kilometre route full of games and challenges, will be able to marvel at the splendours of this pretty corner of the Périgord Noir at their own pace. For experienced hikers, Coly has many hiking and cycling routes that will allow you to enjoy beautiful walks through its countryside. The "Boucle sur le Causse de Coly" (11 kilometres), the GR 461 which passes through Coly for a few kilometres, but also the route linking Coly to Montignac are essential trails for holidaymakers curious to discover the region. This last one in particular, is to be borrowed absolutely! In addition to offering you beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, it will take you in less than 10 kilometres to the Grotte de Lascaux, the most famous cave in France. Located in the Vézère Valley, this prehistoric cave is one of the most important decorated caves dating back to the Palaeolithic era. If the original cave, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is now closed to the public in order to be preserved, you can still visit its twin sister, Lascaux II, a faithful reproduction of this jewel of history.
If you prefer water sports to hiking, the Vézère is the ideal place to indulge in your favourite sports: canoeing, kayaking, rafting, white water activities are numerous in the Dordogne!
Finally, visiting Coly also means taking a few gastronomic moments in a region with gourmet traditions. Truffles, foie gras, mushrooms, ceps, chestnuts, walnuts, but also cabécou, confits, wines, strawberries, duck and other honeys are real jewels of French gastronomy, which are the pride of the inhabitants of the Périgord Noir.
