About forty kilometres north-east of Périgueux, the small village of Saint-Médard-d'Excideuil is in the heart of a region adored by the French for its landscapes, its history and its setting that is ideal for rest and escape: the Dordogne.

Rich of a very old history, Saint-Médard-d'Excideuil sees its origins going back to the time of Antiquity. If the town is nowadays famous for its famous Repetto factory which has been making quality ballet slippers, ballerinas and shoes for decades, it is also famous for its heritage, both built and natural. Here, in this beautiful corner of the Dordogne, the monuments to be seen are legion and all more surprising and exciting one than the other. Strolling through the village, it is impossible to miss the high grey bell tower of the Saint-Médard church. A Romanesque church with a dome, surrounded by legends because of the unexplained disappearance of a harmonium within it, it is worth a visit for its decorations and its 16th century altarpiece. For a break in the green, nothing better than a stopover on the side of the Jardin d'Hélys-œuvre: labelled "remarkable garden", this park created in 1830 concentrates on 12 hectares a very large number of species with fragrant scents, in total more than a thousand trees in the middle of which it is not uncommon to come across artistic exhibitions. Back in the heart of the village, here, many posh houses and other manor houses have blossomed over the centuries to give the town a certain cachet, and a crazy elegance. The Manoir de la Jorie is worth seeing, as is the Manoir des Gissous. But the inventory does not stop there since Saint-Médard-d'Excideuil counts on its territory magnificent castles to be discovered! The Château des Charreaux, of which only a large and imposing tower remains today, but also the Château de la Guichardie, or the Château d'Essendiéras are among the most beautiful. The latter, composed of two large 15th and 17th century manor houses and a 19th century castel, shines by its elegant setting and particularly conducive to strolling; it is also here that the novelist André Maurois stayed for nearly 40 years, in the company of many intellectuals such as Jean Cocteau and Jean Dutour. Finally, not far from here, the Château de la Farge is also worth a visit: a former 18th century dwelling, it impresses as much for its architecture as for its idyllic setting on the banks of the Loue river which meanders through the village.

The Loue river and its valleys constitute a natural area of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest; in other words, these particularly bucolic green valleys are a perpetual invitation to go for a walk, whether you are an experienced hiker or a Sunday walker. As for golf aficionados, they will be able to revel in an absolutely magnificent course in the domain of Essendiéras: a 9-hole course, it invites amateurs and golf enthusiasts to take up their challenges while enjoying the splendid panoramas of the Périgord Vert which, resolutely, bears its name well. Hikes towards the Château de Hautefort, the Château de La Marthonie, Savignac-les-Églises, the Tourtoirac Cave, the Villars Caves, the superb Etang de Born and the Rouffiac-en-Périgord Lake for a swimming break (20 kilometres to the north) will complete the range of must-sees in your "to do list" of holidays in Saint-Médard-d'Excideuil!
