With a history dating back to the Neolithic period, Die is an ancient Roman city with a beautiful preserved heritage. You will not be able to visit it without seeing its ramparts: two kilometres long and 3.60 metres wide, this thick 3rd century wall encircles the heart of the village. The Porte Saint-Marcel, Die's main entrance door, is also worth seeing: dating from the 3rd century, it is the only period door in the town to have stood the test of time. After walking along the ramparts, climb up to the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville: known for its fountain and bronze bust of the Countess Beatrice de Die, it offers incomparable views of the Glandasse mountain which overlooks the entire city. The Place de l'Évêché and its former Episcopal Palace are also worth a visit: its Saint-Nicolas chapel, built in one of the towers of the rampart, is one of Die's most interesting sites. Its sumptuous 12th century mosaic (mosaic of the Four Rivers), its wall paintings, its 18th century wallpapers and its beautiful altar engraved with a bull make it a unique place marked by history. The Protestant temple and its sculpted door in the Louis XIV style, the "Faure de Vercors" house and its door with braces, the Notre-Dame cathedral, the rue du marché and its old houses, the vaulted passage of the Rue des Cordeliers, the rue Camille Buffardel and its "Musée Archéologique de Die et du Diois", the Château Saint-Laurent, the Abbey of Valcroissant and its wonderful views over the steep valleys, the rue de l'Armellerie, the district of Chastel, its narrow streets and its citadel are just some of the places to see during your stay in Die.
