In the heart of the Drôme department, halfway between Montélimar and Avignon, Suze-la-Rousse is located on the border of the Vaucluse department. What to expect on your way to Suze-la-Rousse? An avalanche of cultural sites to discover, a preserved heritage, a generous nature and a haven of peace where you already dream of packing your bags.

Named after the ochre-coloured stones of its imposing castle, Suze-la-Rousse's origins date back to medieval times. A city of capital importance at the time, it preserves a splendid heritage from its rich past, which we strongly recommend that you discover. To begin, take the time to stroll through its old village built on the side of the Garenne. Along its mostly paved streets, you will discover everything that makes Suze-la-Rousse an authentic and charming village: its narrow streets made of calades, its old houses made of old stones in warm colours, but also its historical remains testify to its very beautiful architectural capital. Wander through the cool shaded alleys, such as rue de l'Escurailler, rue de l'Armourie or chemin de la Verdière, until you reach the foot of the castle: particularly spectacular, this 12th century medieval fortress built by the descendants of the princes of Orange dazzles its visitors thanks to its 15th century Italian Renaissance court. Its large pit, thick defensive walls and wine university make this place a unique site. With its gypseries, stuccoes and rich decorations (including the magnificent fireplace in the VIP lounge on the first floor), this place steeped in history is really worth a visit. Before going back down again to walk in the cool wooded alleys of the Garenne wooded park, take the time to observe the breathtaking panorama of the laces of Montmirail and Mont Ventoux from the castle's high terraces. Once in the Garenne you can enjoy the calm of this place planted with Mediterranean species to hike, on foot or by bike, to discover the local flora and the views that this park offers over the surrounding valleys. Occupied since the Neolithic period, this place, dotted with tall holm oaks, was once a hunting reserve: you can see a 16th century palm game as well as an 18th century dovecote and a seigneurial chapel, built during the 17th century.

As for hiking, the Suze-la-Rousse area is full of itineraries, whether for hiking, horseback riding or cycling: the Saint-Louis pond, the vineyards and surrounding villages, not to mention the many castles that dot the region. The Château de Rochegude, the village of Bouchet, the village of Bollène or even Tulette are worth a visit. If the town is watered by the Lez river, allowing visitors to stroll in the coolness of the river, we also advise you to go to Lake Pignedoré, about twenty kilometres from Suze-la-Rousse: divided into two parts, one dedicated to swimming and the other to water sports, it is the perfect place to relax under the sun with family or friends. On the agenda? Windsurfing, paddle, rowing, optimist, but also wind-surfing or volleyball, rollerblading, bicycle rides around the lake... Ideal to cool off on hot summer days!
