Just south of the Cèze, in the Gard department, the small village of Les Mages has everything, oh yes everything to please lovers of green holidays. Historical discoveries, hiking, and bucolic parentheses in the Gard countryside will punctuate your holidays in this pretty corner of the Occitan region.

Nestling in the heart of the Auzonnet valley, some fifteen kilometres north of Alès and 50 minutes from Nîmes, Les Mages is a peaceful village. In the middle of valleys and mountains covered with thick vegetation, the village invites you to discover its history, drawn with the help of its beautiful houses typical of the region. Here, we love the warm tones of the stones, the ochre tile roofs and the authenticity. Made prosperous thanks to sericulture and the silk industry, the town has preserved several buildings on its territory, former silk spinning mills, which you can discover by walking through its streets. The Bleton spinning mill on rue de l'Église, the Lacroix spinning mill on route de Saint-Julien-de-Cassagnas, the Duclaux spinning mill at the Château de Melhien, or the Filature Blanchère spinning mill housed in an old oil mill.

The commune of Les Mages is watered to the north by the Cèze, and by the Auzonnet to the south. Its Cévennes climate offers its summer visitors hot dry days, beautiful snowy days during the winter, and as many sunny breaks throughout the year, to delight hiking enthusiasts. Whether you're a keen walker or a Sunday sportsman, hiking is the flagship activity here, and you'll have to get into it! Our advice? Put on your most comfortable sneakers and head towards Castellas de Rousson: from this high perched point, a place of pilgrimage, you can admire a breathtaking panorama of Les Mages, Alès in the distance and the neighbouring valleys. Climb up the village hill to see "La Tourette", a small limestone capitelle, which over the years has become the emblem of Les Mages, and don't miss a visit to the hamlets of l'Abadié and Les Moinas, to discover the remains of an ancient monastery along the old royal road. Marked out paths and sometimes sporty trails will allow you to discover all the richness of the rural heritage of the commune, where manor houses, oil mills, wash houses and other lime kilns have flourished over the centuries to give the Magi a picturesque and endearing character.

In the area of Les Mages, several cultural, leisure and sports destinations will complete your stay. A visit to the Grotte de la Cocalière (12 kilometres to the north) is a must, as is a short trip to the Dinopedia amusement park (22 kilometres away). The marvellous and cultural city of Alès is a must, as is Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, only 30 kilometres away. A paradise for hiking, canoeing, river bathing and kayaking, this star destination in the Ardèche will undoubtedly be the icing on the (big!) cake of these holidays in the City of the Magi.
