Founded in 1255 by Alphonse de Poitiers, the bastide of Montreal (or "Montroyal"), a former royal bastide, is one of those pearls whose secret one would like to keep forever. Comfortably located in the department of Gers, in the Midi-Pyrénées region, the first Gascon bastide is both an ancient and medieval city, rich in a very ancient history that today shines through its streets. What else should you see? Its 18th century marie, but also its archaeological museum, which reveals many elements discovered during excavations in the Gallo-Roman villa of Séviac. A classical villa from the 4th century, this absolutely magnificent villa has magnificent rooms, including a thermal complex and a courtyard decorated with galleries and mosaic pavements that are absolutely splendid, immersing you in the charm of the era. The paleological site of Béon is worth a visit, as are the Château de Fourcès and the Château de Barlain, easily identifiable by its rectangular dwelling pierced by amazing loopholes and flanked by a large square keep. The Collégiale Saint-Philippe-et-Saint-Jacques de Montréal is known for being built in place of one of the first churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary: dating from 1300, it is partly fortified and impresses with its imposing size and the beauty of its Gallo-Roman mosaic. The Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre de Genens, dating from the 12th century, the Gothic church of Luzanet and the church of Saint-Louis-et-Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Routgès on the route to Santiago de Compostela will complete your discovery.
