A few steps from Mulhouse, in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park, Wattwiller is one of those little-known gems that nevertheless has a lot to offer. Renowned for its mineral water, this charming town promises a change of scenery, relaxation and discovery to its lucky visitors.
In the Haut-Rhin department, in the Grand Est region, Wattwiller is a town that has all the features of those Alsatian villages that we love so much. Crossed by the route of Santiago de Compostela that connects Wissembourg to Belfort, the town spreads between 266 and 1121 meters above sea level, backed by the last slopes of the southern Vosges. A village of character, wooded and particularly pleasant, it is endowed with a vineyard that is more than 8 centuries old, located on the famous Wine Route, and which will not fail to delight wine lovers passing through its walls, but also cycling aficionados who will delight in strolling through the vineyard slopes and foothill orchards that dot the Wattwiller region. But before setting out to conquer the hills and valleys that surround the town, take the time to discover its heritage. The Saint-Jean church is worth seeing, as is the Uhlans cemetery in the heart of the forest, a heritage to which can be added the many fountains that have flourished in the heart of the town over the centuries. After discovering the Saint-Sébastien fountain near the rue du Général de Gaulle, the Saint-Népomucène fountain in front of the presbytery, the Haut fountain and the Gohr fountain, you will not be able to miss the many crosses and calvaries that dot the territory of Wattwiller. Rich in ancient history, the town also has many rich castles that you can discover during your visits: the Château de Gohr below the church, the Château Baudry, the Château de Hagenbach or the Château fort Herenfluh on the eponymous rock will give you a good overview of the local architecture.
But Wattwiller has also been marked by history, particularly by the First World War. Today, many bunkers, shelters and trenches are still visible in the town, such as the Mégard fort or the Feste Bamberg, a fortification located just above the "Unter Rehfelsen" at an altitude of 766 metres.
In another register, Wattwiller is known as a water town. As such, a contemporary art centre on the theme of water was opened in 2013 in a studio in the town's former thermal springs; ideal for a cultural break and a cool interlude on hot summer days, it is a must-see for its many original works and themed exhibitions. A hike to the Hartmannswillerkopf, the Grand Ballon, a walk around the Michelbach dam, a visit and shopping session in Mulhouse or Colmar will complete your stay in Alsace.
