Wedged between Calvi and Ile Rousse, Lumio seems to be the ideal place for a sunny break. Located in the department of Haute-Corse, this typical commune of the Isle of Beauty reveals a wonderful coastline composed of nearly 17 kilometres of beaches and preserved coves.
Bordered by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, Lumio is known for its dream landscapes. Home to some celebrities when summer comes, Laetitia Casta's native village attracts with its idyllic setting and light. Built during the 15th century, this perched town is made up of a centre dotted with numerous pedestrian paths and superb stone houses, witnesses to Lumio's rich history. The Santa-Maria church (1878), in particular, is certainly one of the most visited places in the city: in baroque style, it does not go unnoticed with its bell tower perched 36 metres high. Another religious building to see: the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul chapel. In Romanesque Revival style, this magnificent chapel is made of pink granite, a rare rock that you can only find in Corsica, Brittany or China. Remains of the Genoese occupation still remain of some tall towers scattered here and there in the city: the first, the Square Tower of Caldanu, was destroyed by the English army in 1794. You can observe the ruins by going to Punta Caldanu, west of the village. Facing the sea, the Spano Tower on the tip of the same name is really worth a visit: located on the heights of the rugged Lumio coast, it is located in the heart of an absolutely magnificent preserved natural site, from which the views over the sea and the mountains of Balagne are breathtaking. The last one, called the Lomellini Tower, is located below Monte Bracaju, in the heart of the city.
What makes Lumio so charming is certainly its sumptuous nature: hiking enthusiasts will be delighted to discover that the town is crossed by multiple walking routes for all levels. From Algajo Bay to the tip of Spano, through its coastal paths and routes through the city, you can contemplate all the wonders Lumio has to offer.
