It is in the Hautes-Alpes department, not far from the Parc National des Écrins, that the commune of Saint-Chaffrey is located. Coquète village being part of the 4 communes of the resort of Serre Chevalier Vallée, it is composed of several villages that are Chantemerle, La Gérande, Le Poncet and Villard-Laté. Located near the ski lifts and the Ratler panoramic cable car, it is the ideal place to pack your bags for family holidays in both winter and summer.
A charming village resort in the hollow of the mountains, Saint-Chaffrey, bathed in the sun, is one of those places where it is good to put on skis and snowshoes for beautiful excursions through the tranquility of the snow-covered mountains. Linked to Serre Chevalier, the largest winter sports resort in the Southern Alps, Saint-Chaffrey will allow you to practice a wide range of sporting activities, both in winter and summer. With more than 250 kilometres of ski slopes adapted for all levels and all the family, Serre-Chevalier is one of the most popular ski areas in France. Both sporty and playful, with its high mountain atmosphere at an altitude of 2800 metres and its more intimate walks through the valleys and the larch forest, Serre-Chevalier will seduce a large public of holidaymakers. In all, more than a hundred ski slopes will be offered to you during this stay as well as several play areas including a snowpark and a boardercross. From Saint-Chaffrey, you can easily access Serre-Chevalier's 35 kilometres of Nordic ski routes : the perfect sports alternative between snowshoeing and downhill skiing, cross-country skiing offers magnificent sporting walks, while enjoying the splendours of the landscape. And the panoramas of the Guisane valley are particularly sumptuous, especially in the early morning when the snow is still immaculate. For non-skiers, the resort offers many "after-ski" activities for young and old, from tobogganing downhill to snowshoeing via 6 high loops and numerous itineraries, but also guided family visits, hiking, ice skating, joëring ski courses, You will also have access to relaxation areas where saunas, hammams, whirlpools and massage sessions will allow you to let go in the middle of the mountains, especially in the "Grands Bains de Monêtier".
During the summer, lovers of climbing, via ferrata, hiking and high-altitude lakes can have a field day ! Saint-Chaffrey is the starting point for many hiking itineraries and has some magnificent sites not to be missed, such as the Pisse waterfall (don't trust its somewhat repulsive name, it is worth a detour), the "Pierre aux Œufs" (a sacred stone laid on the floor of the Pinée wood), the dazzling Crêtes de Peyrolle at 2645 metres above sea level (which will offer you wonderful panoramas over the glaciers of Les Écrins), or the famous Col du Granon. Located at an altitude of 2413 metres, the latter is the starting point for numerous excursions to the Oule and Cristol lakes in particular, but also for bicycle rides : in fact, with an average gradient of 9%, the ascent of this pass is reserved for experienced cyclists !
Finally Briançon (the highest town in France) being only a few minutes away, we advise you to go there for a day to discover its riches, like the magnificent Parc de la Schappe, its fort Randouillet and its fortifications of the eighteenth century.
