Located in the heart of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park, the town of Assay is an ideal base for gourmet stays in communion with nature. When you pack your bags in Assay, it is the Loire by bike, its vineyards and famous castles that open up to you! Ready to take on the adventure?

If there is one site to see in Assay, it is its pond: with a surface area of 33 hectares, this fish-bearing lake is well known to fishing enthusiasts as well as ornithology enthusiasts who come in large numbers to observe protected bird species. The pond loop itinerary will take you nearly 12 kilometres through the Touraine countryside to discover the grey herons, egrets, gulls, terns, seagulls and shore swallows that inhabit the woods around the lake.

The Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park has many interpretation trails for young and old, experienced adventurers and Sunday hikers alike. The Guzeux, Benais and Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt trails are particularly recommended for families: the latter, 4.5 kilometres long, will allow you to discover all the secrets of silviculture, from planting seeds to cutting wood. Walk or cycle along the Chamaillard stream, the Basché stream or the Bois Billard stream for pretty discoveries in the freshness of the various watercourses that water the town. Mountain bike fans? Know that from Assay, you can reach Chinon and its Loire cycle paths with a few pedals: this cycle route, certainly the most famous in France, will take you for more than 800 kilometres through the countryside, woods and vineyards, to allow you to admire some of the wonders of the Loire and its banks.

About twenty kilometres from the heart of the village, it is the Vienne which will delight water sports enthusiasts: known for its sometimes capricious meanders, the Vienne is the ideal place for a kayak trip between Île Bouchard, Anché, Lugynes, Chinon and Montsoreau. From the river, you can discover the Royal Fortress of Chinon, its vineyards, groves, marshes, beavers and birds, but also its neighbouring villages such as Candes-Saint-Martin and Montsoreau, both classified "Most Beautiful Villages in France".

Finally, do not miss during your visits the splendid Château du Rivau just 5 kilometres from Assay (11€ for adult admission and 5€ for children): you can go there on foot, by bike or even on horseback rides, which are very popular during summer stays. Classified as a Historic Monument, this medieval castle will dazzle you with its imposing architecture made of high dungeons and charged rooms with Gothic decorations... But it will surprise you even more with the splendour of its extraordinary gardens! Fourteen of these magnificent gardens, classified as "Remarkable Gardens", have the particularity of sheltering more than 460 different varieties of roses, each more fragrant than the next. Also, Richelieu (11 kilometres away), Rigny-Ussé and its château de la Belle au Bois Dormant, Azay-le-Rideau (29 kilometres away), Villandry and Amboise (85 kilometres away) are also worth a visit!
