City of Art and History, Angers is above all famous for its legendary fortress: built in the 13th century by Saint-Louis, the Château d'Angers was the residence of the Dukes of Anjou during the 14th and 15th centuries. Flanked by 17 towers, this imposing medieval fortress is famous as much for its impressive architecture as for its decorations and its treasure: the tapestry of the Apocalypse. The largest medieval tapestry in the world (no less!), it was made in the 14th century for Duke Louis I of Anjou and remains to this day one of the most remarkable tapestries in the world, with a length of more than 100 metres. In addition to housing a fabulous Tapestry Museum, the castle will amaze you with the beauty of its hanging gardens and its breathtaking views over the city and the Maine River! Among the emblematic monuments of Angers, the Saint-Maurice cathedral also occupies a place of choice: built in a pure Angevin style, it contains magnificent 12th century stained glass windows that we recommend you discover. The visit continues on the side of the Saint-Croix square, behind the cathedral, where stands the Maison d'Adam, an absolutely splendid timber-framed house dating from the 16th century. In addition to its half-timbered walls, this original house is astonishing for its facade sculpted with small wooden characters that will not fail to amaze young and old alike.

Cradle of the Plantagenets, Angers is a veritable open-air museum where private mansions, charming homes and impressive monuments follow one another. Don't miss the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church, the former Demarie-Valentin mansion which now houses the Natural History Museum, or the Fine Arts Museum housed in the Barrault mansion.
