At the foot of the Rhune and a stone's throw from the wonderful beaches of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Ascain is a small village in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, the most peaceful of villages. It's exotic, cultural, and ideally situated, it's the perfect place to pack your bags with family or friends.

Crossed by the Nivelle river, which a few kilometres further on flows into the ocean beaches, Ascain, or Azkaine, lies on the border with Spain, which it touches with its finger on the summit of the Rhune. Only 6 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean and its particularly sporty coast, Ascain is a water city thanks to the Nivelle river but also to its many tributaries that shape its contours. Inhabited since Protohistory, as the funerary remains discovered on the slopes of the Rhune attest, the village nowadays boasts a very attractive architectural heritage, including no less than 6 monuments listed in the inventory of historical monuments. To capture the soul of Ascain, head for the village centre; structured around its town hall and its small pediment, this former trading port is dotted with typical white houses with orange tiled roofs and green and red shutters. If the town centre is rather lively thanks to its shops, a church around which are organized magnificent half-timbered houses and its famous pediment on which many Basque pelota players gather, Ascain surprises however by its peaceful atmosphere and its unusual charm. Take the time to stroll along the old port, now transformed into a bucolic place to stroll, right on the banks of the Nivelle river, where you will not fail to come across some fishing enthusiasts who have come to cast their lines early in the morning. A must to see? The Pont Romain... which is only Roman in name, as it actually dates back to the 15th century. Borrowed by the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela to reach the capital of Galicia, this bridge over the Nivelle is one of the oldest elements of the local construction.

Ascain is also a village proud of its local products. For many years, the town has placed great emphasis on Basque craftsmanship, particularly thanks to its craft zone, which is home to many of the region's most renowned companies, both for the manufacture of Basque linen and for its tableware, its pearly pearls, its beers (at the Akerbeltz brewery, for those who love them), its Basque cider (at the Txopinondo cider house) and its local delicacies (at the Confit d'Ascain).

In Ascain, nature is omnipresent and the relief of its valleys will be perfect for sportsmen and women. Things to do? Climb the Rhune! On foot for the more experienced, thanks to several paths starting from the Olhette district or the quarries (2 hours of ascent, 1h30 of descent), or thanks to the Rhune train (at the Saint Ignace pass) for the more contemplative, who can overtake the walkers and reach the summit of the Rhune in only 35 minutes! Once at the top, an incredible panorama awaits you over the Basque Country, Spain and the Atlantic coast, making this trip a must on your visit. The summits of Esnaur, Larrun and Bizkarzun, not forgetting the routes leading to the ocean beaches will complete the inventory of hikes in the area.

Finally, it is impossible to stay in Ascain without a trip to the beach at Saint-Jean-de-Luz!
