Explore Le Crotoy
Emblematic destination of the Picardy coast, Le Crotoy seduces every year many families in search of holidays in the open air. Preserved, exotic and 100% natural, this charming seaside resort has all the cards in hand for you to spend an unforgettable stay on the banks of the English Channel.
Bordered to the north by the Baie de Somme National Nature Reserve, the seaside resort of Le Crotoy is one of those destinations that are (almost) no longer presented, so popular are they. Located in the Somme department, north of the cliffs of Cayeux-sur-Mer and Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme, Le Crotoy is classified among the most beautiful villages in France. Here, nature is queen: it is nature that is the main asset of the resort. Nature. And how beautiful it is there! For a perfect discovery of the Crotoy and its preserved flora, head for the magnificent Parc du Marquenterre, located in the heart of the Baie de Somme Nature Reserve. Between land and sea, this gigantic marsh of more than 200 hectares studded with reedbeds and dunes is one of those unique places where man seems to have not altered the splendour of the panoramas. Equipped with boots (to wade in the mud or wet sand, it is more practical), this majestic site will seduce you by the splendour and immensity of its landscapes. Family? We can only advise you to visit the Parc Ornithologique du Marquenterre. An immense open-air refuge for more than 300 species of migratory birds, it fills the curiosity of young and old alike thanks to its 3 visit routes dotted with 12 observation posts, where you can observe passerines, ducks, egrets, herons, gulls, small waders, white spoonbills, birds of prey, grey geese and storks depending on the time of year. Push your visit just in front of the Crotoy, on the side of the Pointe du Hourdel: if the place lends itself willingly to the stroll, it is above all known to shelter a whole colony of grey seals and sea calves, easily observable all year round.
In addition to its undeniable green side, the oxygen bubble that is Le Crotoy is also a destination marked by history. The starting point of a whole fleet of ships of William the Conqueror during his conquest of England in the 11th century, the town was first English and then French during the Hundred Years War. Embellished with a fortress in 1340, it became an important destination for sea bathing from the beginning of the 19th century, attracting under its parasols illustrious figures such as Jules Verne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Victor Hugo and Pierre Guerlain, to name but a few. Visit the church of Saint-Pierre and its 13th century tower, but also the remains of the old ramparts, the Belle-Époque villas decorated with bow-windows (such as the Villa Marguerite, the Maison Millevoye...), take a walk on the fishing port, around the Bassée ponds, to finally stroll along the promenade which runs along the beaches of the resort.
A real open-air playground for children and sports enthusiasts, the fine sandy beaches of Le Crotoy are ideal both for your gourmet breaks to enjoy ice cream or mussel-fries facing the sea, and for bubbling in the sun. They are also well known by the sportsmen who come there in number to swim, sail (there is often wind in the area), but also to surf, paddle or kitesurf!
