Explore Château d'Olonne
Situated on the Côte de Lumière, facing the Atlantic, Château d'Olonne is an ideal resort to spend a serene holiday in the heart of the Vendée. Between cultural discoveries, sporting activities and rest, you will be able to compose your program according to your desires while enjoying a formidable natural framework.
Even if the resort takes its name from a castle, do not look for any fortress in Château d'Olonne. Indeed, the old feudal castle was destroyed by order of Richelieu, at the beginning of the seventeenth century to prevent it from falling into the hands of the English. However, if you like monuments that have passed through history, the resort has some nice surprises in store for you. Start by visiting Saint-Hilaire church, built on the site of the old castle with its own stones. Continue your discovery of the heritage by the abbey Saint-Jean d'Orbestier. Founded in 1107, facing the sea, it is listed as a historic monument and has been restored for over 25 years. Finally, admire some private residences like the Fenestreau residence, the Saint-Jean mill and the Combe dwelling.
After this heritage walk, take the ocean path. Along the beach of Tanchet you can enjoy all the pleasures of the sea : swimming, kayaking, surfing, longboarding, waveskiing... or indulge in idleness on the warm sand. If you prefer more wild environments, go to the wild coast, the rocky part of the Castelonnais coast. Very varied landscapes await you there but also some curiosities as the Puits d'enfer, a bubbling fault, or the dune of pebbles of Cayola. Nearby, cyclists will be able to take the specially developed trails for hiking and hikers can follow the GR8 to admire the coastline for many kilometres.
During your stay at Château d'Olonne, offer yourself a trip to Les Sables d'Olonne. Take a tour of the fishing port, its auction, then go and see the marina from where the Vendée Globe sailors leave. Then enjoy the beautiful seaside houses (Palazzo Clementina, Mirasol...), the small district of Penotte Island, the Saint-Clair castle, the Notre-Dame de bon port church and the Saint-Nicolas priory. After a busy day, treat yourself to a good meal featuring local specialties : seafood and fish, ham mogettes, waste...
