The Vendée and its many facets will never cease to surprise you. Off the department lies the island of Noirmoutier, a natural jewel connected to the mainland since 1971 by a bridge. Renowned for its superb natural landscapes and mild climate, the island has had a turbulent past that has left it with unique traditions and a grandiose heritage that its 9,000 inhabitants seek to share without moderation. Nestled in the southeast of the island, Noirmoutier-en-l'Ile has always been the centre of activities. Once the only municipality on the island, it has several historic monuments that bear witness to the island's ancient occupation.

One cannot miss visiting the Château de Noirmoutier-en-l'Ile during a stay in the commune. This jewel of medieval architecture was created in the 12th century. It is surrounded by four towers twenty metres high from which one can admire a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. Witness of many historical events, the castle passed between several hands following the foreign invasions : it was English, Spanish, Dutch and German before returning between the hands of the Noirmoutrins. Since 1935, it has housed a museum retracing the island's tumultuous past through an impressive collection. In 2016, a new exhibition honours the Noirmoutier of the French Revolution, a period during which the island territory was divided between royalists and republicans. This captivating visit in the heart of a monument of remarkable beauty will delight history lovers and curious children.

Noirmoutier-en-l'Ile, it is also long beaches of fine sand where one dies of desire to linger for hours and hours... Rather idleness or swimming in the ocean, with you to choose. In a sporting mood ? We jump into the water with the help of the sailing school's passionate instructors! On the beaches of Danes and Saint-Pierre, you will find areas dedicated to water sports. Come and learn windsurfing, dinghy or catamaran sailing, to name but a few. It should also be noted that the school carries the Famille Plus label, in particular thanks to its sea garden which allows your little ones to awaken to the joys of the ocean in complete safety.

The island of Noirmoutier is also known for its extraordinary gastronomy. Seafood and the famous bonnotte, a variety of potatoes grown on the island for nearly a century, are obviously found on the tables of restaurants noirmoutrins. But little gourmands can't miss a visit to the Biscuiterie Les Petits Cagnotes, located in the centre of Noirmoutier-en-l'Ile. Run by a family of pastry chefs who keep their recipes secret, it is a real paradise for sweet tooth lovers. Shortbread, cookies, chocolates, caramel, meringues, jams... a real treat !

Go on foot to the Bois de la Chaize. Rent a bike to visit the Island. Do your shopping at the halles and go to the restaurant: for the top, "Le Grand Four" and "L'Etier", but many others will delight your taste buds.
