A fortified town from the Middle Ages, the very first in the north of Poitou, La Roche-Posay is one of those unsuspected gems that France keeps secret. In the Vienne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, La Roche-Posay is drawn by the course of the Creuse, which forms a natural border between the Vienne and the Indre-et-Loire. A renowned spa resort, whose reputation radiates beyond our borders, La Roche-Posay is above all a small town with an absolutely sumptuous heritage. Pierced by high fortified gates, such as the Porte Bourbon, the town's emblem and the only remnant of the three gates that once gave access to the historic heart of La Roche-Posay, this charming town still bears witness to its rich past. The machicolated gate, the 12th century keep, the elegant houses and the small squares give this historic town a very special charm. If there is one site to visit, it is the church of Notre-Dame: after visiting the Place Henri IV, take the Rue de l'Écu de France and the Rue Kerlouet to discover this curious building. Built on a Latin cross plan, this superb fortified church is topped by an 11th century bell tower and two towers with false machicolations that you can see from the church square. Its ribbed nave, its beautiful decorations, its modern stained glass windows from 1948 and its sculptures make it one of the most visited monuments in La Roche-Posay. Then take the time for a cool break in the square of the Abbé Brandt to discover, from its ramparts overlooking the Creuse, splendid panoramas both on the river and on the remains of an old mill, testifying to the activity of the village during the Middle Ages.
In addition to its magnificent medieval heritage, La Roche-Posay is known as one of the capitals of thermalism in France. It is therefore only natural that the architecture should reflect this, and it is likely that you will be amazed by the elegant beauty of its houses. Take a stroll through the Parc Thermal with its formal gardens, where a bucolic kiosk and a giant chess set delight onlookers, and don't miss a stroll along the Avenue des Fontaines! This shady avenue, the star of La Roche-Posay, is known for being lined with sumptuous Belle-Époque villas, built at the time of the spa boom. Mullioned windows, poplars, lime trees and other houses with opulent facades (such as Les Loges du Parc) will plunge you into the heart of local history!
