Small town in the north of the Vienne department, on the border with Maine-et-Loire, Saix is located at the entrance to the Loire-Anjou-Tourraine Regional Nature Park. A few steps from the Loire, 20 kilometres from Saumur and 25 kilometres from Chinon, Saix is the ideal place to set down your suitcases for a cultural, historical and gourmet holiday, in the heart of the Loire and its castles.

A quiet rural commune, far from the traditional large tourist destinations, Saix is a real delight for those who love history and old stones. Inhabited since Gallo-Roman times, the town's history is closely linked to Sainte-Radegonde, Queen of the Franks, who founded a hospice and an oratory there in the 6th century. A key figure in Saix, she gave her name to a Romanesque church listed for the unique beauty of its choir and apse, as well as to a chapel which, thanks to contemporary frescoes, recounts the story of her life, from her marriage to Clotaire I to her creation of the abbey of Sainte-Croix de Poitiers, her flight to Touraine or the miracle of the oats. Among the places not to be missed, holidaymakers passing through Saix will be able to discover a large tower, the current remains of the old medieval fortress of the royal villa of Saix, as well as two castles, the Château d'Eternes and the Château de Pas de Loup. Property of the monks of Saint-Hilaire and then attached to the Abbey of Fontevraud in the 14th century, the Château d'Eternes, located in the heart of the vineyards, impresses with its size, its towers and its timeless elegance, which will delight lovers of beautiful stones. Its kiosk, its troglodytic dovecote, its splendidly decorated Saint-Marthe chapel and its wine-tourism circuits make it a must-see!

In order to allow you to discover the richness of the region's architectural and natural heritage, Saix has set up perfect hiking trails for you and your family to follow. The 8-kilometre Sentier des Fontaines (Fountain Trail) will allow you to visit the town, while the Sentier des Grands Chênes (Great Oaks Trail) will offer you a nice break in the countryside. On foot or by bike, the Saix and Loire sectors are well known to hikers who enjoy discovering the richness of the local heritage. What to see? The Château de la Mothe Chandeniers, the Château de Brézé, the Château de Montsoreau built overhanging the Loire, the marvellous Abbaye de Fontevraud known for housing the recumbent figures of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart, but also the Square Tower of Loudun, or the Château de Saumur screwed onto its rocky outcrop will be great ideas for outings during this stay around the royal river.
