Explore Senegal
The most western country on the African continent, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and crossed by the beautiful Casamance River, Senegal surprises by the contrast of its landscapes. Between coastline, salt lakes, dune desert, mangroves, forests, savannah, bush and mountains, you will go from surprises to wonders.
With 700 kilometres of coastline, Senegal invites you first of all to enjoy the ocean. Between Saint-Louis in the north and Kabrousse in the south, there are countless magical places. Discover for example Somone and its magnificent lagoon, a nature reserve which shelters many species of birds : pelicans, pink flamingos, herons... Nearby, enjoy the charm of the fishing villages of Popenguine and Ngaparou, famous for their beautiful beaches. These seaside resorts are also ideal for many water sports such as sailing, surfing, kitesurfing or diving. Fishing enthusiasts will be delighted by the very fishy waters and will be able to practice casting, bigeye or longline.
Senegal is also a country of history and several cities preserve the traces of this rich past. In Dakar, the capital, take a walk in the Plateau district which is home to many buildings from the colonial era : the presidential palace, the cathedral of African remembrance, the museum... But also enjoy more modern buildings such as the great mosque or the gate of the Third Millennium. Dakar is also the privileged embarkation point to discover another place steeped in history : the island of Gorée. Accessible by ferry, this high place of memory of the slave trade, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, allows, thanks to its museums, to take the full measure of this human tragedy.
The other city not to be missed during a stay in Senegal is certainly Saint-Louis. Former colonial capital, this river and sea city, which for a long time was nicknamed the African Venice, is seduced by its colonial houses, its atypical mosque, its fishermen's quarter and its Faidherbe bridge. Nearby, you will enjoy the Langue de Barbarie and Oiseaux du Djoudi National Parks and the Guembeul Wildlife Special Reserve. But also discover the mangrove in the Lower Casamance region or countless animal species and more mountainous landscapes in the vast Niokolo-Koba National Park. Also take advantage of all these places of wonder to taste the flavors of Senegal : thiéboudienne, yassa, mafé, domoda, thiéré...
