If there is one destination that brilliantly combines culture, leisure and idleness, it is certainly Sant Marti d'Empuries. In the province of Girona, north of L'Escala on the Costa Brava, this historic city has all the ingredients for a successful holiday just fifty kilometres from the French border.

A typical village in the Catalan countryside, Sant Marti d'Empuries is inviting many people to come and discover its many charms. A few kilometres from Empuriabrava and Rosas, Sant Marti d'Empuries is THE cultural destination of the Costa Brava. The archaeological site of Empuries, located between L'Escala and Sant Marti, attracts the curiosity of many visitors every year: with the ruins of its Roman forum, its Greek city, the remains of its Roman wall, its splendid well-preserved Roman mosaics and its statues, this historically significant place will allow you to discover a whole section of the heritage left by Ancient Rome and the Greeks in this small corner of paradise on the Iberian Peninsula. The place is particularly suitable for walking, and several hiking routes connect the ancient site to the beaches of Sant Marti d'Empuries lives of the coastal paths. In the shade of the maritime pines, you will discover very beautiful views of the Pyrenees and Rosas opposite, as well as the very rugged coast of Sant Marti d'Empuries, dotted with small coves ideal for relaxing breaks away from the crowd.

The heart of the village of Sant Marti d'Empuries is also worth a visit: a medieval village, it has some interesting sites, such as the parish church of Sant Marti, located on Plaça Major: imposing, this square church surmounted by battlements stands on the ruins of the moats of the medieval castle of the city. If it impresses by its architecture, we advise you to push its door to discover its Roman potteries, its rose window and its early Christian decorations. Just next door, the Casa del Servei Forestal, known for its Art Deco stained glass windows, is worth a visit, as are the Victor Català Garden and the Sant Marti d'Empuries Castle: located not far from the sea, near Plaça Major, the ruins of this castle bear witness to the importance of Sant Marti during the 13th century. Walking along its narrow streets dotted with houses from flowered periods, you will inevitably come across the remains of its old ramparts: dating from the 13th century, this rather well-preserved wall crosses the city from one end of the city to the other, giving it a crazy character and a very special atmosphere.

At the foot of the village, Sant Marti beach will be ideal for idleness breaks with family or friends. With its chiringuitos where you can eat tapas, it is one of the most popular in the area, attracting many holidaymakers to its fine sand. Facing the ancient ruins, the beach of Muscleres will conquer lovers of calm and diving when families take the direction of the beach of Moll Grec, appreciated for its wide bicycle path and its mattress rental stands. Finally, the wonderful beach of El Portitxol, located just next to the Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia-Empuries, is really worth a visit: with its arch made of rocks (the Arc du Portitxol) and its absolutely magnificent turquoise water, it is considered (rightly!) one of the most beautiful beaches on the Costa Brava.
