The location of Ametlla de Mar has placed it at the heart of many historical events, some of which have left their mark on the city. Nowadays, the Castle of Sant Jordi d'Alfama, a fortress built in 1732, is a survivor of these turbulent centuries of history. The maritime wealth of the city is a strong heritage widely exploited by the tourist industry. Most of the activities are oriented towards the sea and its many facets. The Center for the Interpretation of Fishing reconstructs the evolution of the fishery at Ametlla de Mar until its post-war rise, when it became one of the most important ports in Catalonia.
