Explore Tunisia
With its breathtaking landscapes, its exciting cities and its important cultural heritage, Tunisia attracts every year many visitors from all horizons. At 2h30 from France and enjoying 600 kilometers of beaches, Tunisia is among the favorite holiday destinations of the French. Between the sea and the desert, the country conceals a multitude of panoramas, cities and monuments to discover.
Start your visit in Tunis, in the north : with its many listed monuments, the capital of Tunisia is well worth a visit. The medina is surely one of the most touristy places in the city : walk through its narrow streets dotted with pretty, huge and colourful gates. Take the time to lose yourself in its souk, to discover the local artisans, and sit down in one of its many restaurants to taste the local cuisine, authentic and sunny. Couscous, mechouia salad, tajines, chorba, egg bricks, meat stews, grilled fish, but also baklawa, makrout and gazelle horns will be on the menu of your Tunisian dinners. To eliminate a little, take a stroll through its old town centre, whose construction dates back to the Ottoman Empire. Visit the Bardo Museum which houses the most beautiful Roman mosaics ever discovered, but also the Zitouna Mosque, the central nucleus of this city.
Carthage and its remains are a must visit just 20 minutes from the city centre. If today it is a chic residential suburb belonging to Tunis, made of elegant villas and luxury shops, the ancient city of Carthage and its ruins classified as World Heritage by UNESCO attract thousands of visitors every year. The Antonine thermal baths, the Tophet sanctuary, the theatre and the Roman villas district located on the Odeon hill are places that history lovers will not want to miss.
Walk to the pretty town of Sidi Bou Saïd. Overlooking the golf of Tunis, this village of craftsmen is known for its amazing architecture and authenticity. Its typically Tunisian houses painted in white contrast with the azure of the sea and the coloured flowers affixed to the blue windows of the houses. Tea lovers will head to Café aux Nattes to sip a delicious mint tea.
Appointment with the sun of the seaside resort of Hammamet, located at one hour of road. Hurry into the souks of its beautiful medina, walk along its ramparts and streets, with white walls and colorful doors. Stop in a mosque, a pottery, to soak up the rhythm of the city. But if you come to Hammamet, it is especially for its magnificent golden beaches where you can indulge in a relaxing session under the sun. You can also enjoy a wide range of water activities, from water skiing and surfing to windsurfing and scuba diving.
Djerba, in the south, is a very popular tourist city. This island along the Gulf of Gabes has sumptuous white sandy beaches, lined with turquoise water and wealthy houses. Here, you will appreciate the mild climate conducive to idleness, under the palm trees of Midi Mahrez, or to swimming and water sports on the beach of Seguia.
Finally, venture into the bright orange dunes of the Sahara, stop in Sousse and Tozeur, stop in Tabarka, the city of sunflowers, but also in Matmata where you can admire troglodyte houses, nestled in an astonishing lunar landscape that has served as a backdrop to the "Star Wars" saga.
