At the confluence of the Garonne and Neste rivers, just at the foot of the Pyrenees, Montréjeau lies between the ocean and the Mediterranean. 55 kilometres from Tarbes and 80 kilometres from the marvellous Pic du Midi de Bigorre, Montréjeau is a bastide in the heart of the Pays de Rivière. Perched at an altitude of 460 metres, this town is the link between the Gascony foothills, the central Pyrenees, the Haut Languedoc and the plains of Bigorre. In the heart of the white-capped mountains, the village offers incredible panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, where sunny plateaus rub shoulders with hills and valleys where the rivers meander. Montréjeau is divided into three parts: the plateau of the Pyrenean foothills, the high terrace, and the Garonne valley. It is on the high terrace that life first developed, before gaining ground on the piedmont plateau. Protected by the Pyrenees, Montréjeau's origins go back a long way. To discover its rich history, opt for a walking tour of the village; start at the Place Valentin Abeille, the beating heart of the village, where the market takes place every week. Then discover the statue of Saint Jean-Baptiste, and the old arcades that surround the square, and which give it a great charm. Go through the rue Pelleport, the dead end of the church to discover the site of the old Porte Saint-Jean, which was once one of the 4 entrance gates to the town, a town once enclosed by a thick wall that has now been destroyed. Discover the Saint Jean-Baptiste church which was once fortified, the Sainte-Germaine convent, cross the Mercadieu square and finally stop off at the Boulevard de Lassus: a veritable belvedere on the Pyrenees, this boulevard offers a magnificent panorama of the Ariege mountains, the neighbouring Spanish massifs and the indisputable Pic du Midi de Bigorre... A must-see, and to be immortalised in the rising sun! The Lassus Orangery in the grounds of the eponymous Hotel (inspired by the Petit Trianon in Versailles), but also the Seminary, the former Augustinian Convent, the panorama from the Jardin de la Salle and the Tomb of Christ in the central alley of the cemetery will be added to the list of sites to discover.

Our advice? On foot or by bike, take the Sarrieu Bridge: made of metal, this bridge built by Gustave Eiffel in 1878 is one of the most famous sites in Montréjeau! It will lead you to the Lake of Montréjeau, the perfect place to bubble under the sun! A perfect place to relax, it has earned the village the "Station Verte" label thanks to its many facilities: orienteering course, fitness area, swimming area, paddle, kayaks, hiking trails (including the GR86), fishing trails, picnic areas, birdwatching trails... It is even bordered by the Comminges Golf Course, a 9-hole golf course that will offer you beautiful views of the mountains! The Aventignan lake is just a few steps away and the Valmirande Castle will complete your visit to the Montréjeau area!
