On the border with Lower and Upper Provence, Céreste, in the Luberon, is without doubt one of the pearls of Provence. Nestled at the foot of the Monts de Vaucluse to the north and protected by the Luberon mountain range to the south, Céreste, 17 kilometres from Apt, offers those who visit it a dream setting for stays based on authenticity. A small village of 1300 inhabitants, located on the road to Forcalquier, Céreste has a fantastic natural heritage made up of green plains where it is definitely good to walk. But before you set off to conquer its hills, take the time to visit the village of Céreste: steeped in history, it is full of sites to discover, sites that will delight lovers of old stones and the charm of Provence. Here, the narrow streets are made of cobblestones, and offer to contemplate incredible 15th century houses with facades designed with gargoyles, perched at 370 meters high. Old houses with brick-coloured tile roofs, decorated with shutters painted in pastel shades, give Céreste a Provençal charm that makes you feel at home in no time. In addition to the tall houses and picturesque alleys, the fountains and tree-lined squares will immerse you even more in the very special atmosphere of this Provencal village. What to see? The church of Saint-Michel, redesigned in the 18th century for its architecture and its polychrome wooden statue of Saint-Michel slaying the dragon, but also the remains of the medieval castle that once sat in the heart of Céreste. From this medieval period, in addition to some houses from the 13th, 16th and 17th centuries, the town still has several witnesses, such as its sections of ramparts and its Renaissance-style gate. Undeniably marked by history, Céreste has a magnificent religious heritage that you can discover during your stay; a little away from the town, the chapel of Saint-Georges at a place called Calavon, or the priory of Carluc and the chapel of Notre-Dame de Pitié (from the 15th century) are must-sees. The latter, considered the treasure of Céreste, is famous for its rock necropolis linked to the chapel by an underground gallery.

On foot or by bike, you will have the leisure during this stay to discover the beauty of the preserved nature of Provence. You will be able to discover two ancient Roman bridges, one called the "Pont du Baou" on the road to Carluc, the other perched above the Aiguebelle. Shepherds' shelters and other dovecotes, emblematic of the local heritage, can be discovered during walks along the Via Domitia, as well as the fauna and flora of the Luberon. The Calavon and Encrême valleys, the foothills of the Montagne de Lure, the Forcalquier plateau to the east, but also the Encrême gorges, the banks of the Calavon and Aiguebelle rivers, the vineyards, the olive groves, the GR4 trails or the routes that climb to the village summits at an altitude of over 970 metres will delight both the contemplative and the most experienced sportsmen.
