A favourite destination in the Ardèche Gorges, Salavas is the ideal place for sports holidays in the heart of sparkling nature. A small village established on the banks of the river opposite Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, Salavas, whose village has a strong historical heritage, is adored by walkers who come, all year round, to explore its paths through forests, mountains and magnificent shores. Built in the heart of a natural site of exceptional beauty, Salavas is a small and picturesque village. Surprisingly, Salavas has preserved many medieval buildings from its glorious past. Its medieval site is a place where it is pleasant to stroll, to the rhythm of its old stones and alleys that will make you take a real step back in time. You will come across many religious buildings, such as the Chapel of Saint Anne and the churches of Saint Julien and Saint John, but if there is one site that cannot be ignored, it is the Château de Salavas. Probably built during the 12th century, it was looted, destroyed and rebuilt several times, and now houses exhibitions and objects found on the city's medieval archaeological site. Not far from the latter, you will find the Tour du Moulin: an imposing 21-metre high square fortress perched on a rocky islet, this tower, a strategic passage in the defence of the Ardèche, was once owned by the lords of the Château de Salavas. If you like guided tours, the "Balades de Salavas" will allow you to discover the smallest secrets of the town, walking through its streets steeped in history. In particular, you can discover the remains of missing churches, old bread ovens, as well as fountains and mills via the "Circuit de la Roche" and the "Circuit de la Maltourne", which will allow you to discover belvederes with impressive panoramas.
Don't forget your hiking boots! The communal forest of Salavas is also the perfect place for hiking excursions. Through its holm oaks, plums, garrigue, scented thyme, pines, brooms and cherries, but also via the GR4 linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, you can discover all the richness of the local flora and fauna. You can cross paths with many of the raptors that live in the area, such as the eagle owl, buzzard, frightened owls and tawny owls, not to mention the rattle falcon and hawks. Thanks to its beautiful limestone cliffs, this forest is popular with climbing enthusiasts who come to indulge in their favourite activity on three sites designed for all levels. On the Fontgarnide site, you will find a total of 105 lanes from 15 to 35 metres, 23 lanes from 4 to 10 metres on the Jeau site, and finally 47 lanes from 20 to 40 metres on the Les Branches site, all in a beautifully preserved natural setting. Also note that from the Colline de la Serre, at an altitude of 549 metres, the panorama is breathtaking over the mountains of the Ardèche. Back in town, what could be better than to visit one of Salavas' many brands and enjoy delicious dishes in the local colours? On the menu, river trout, goat cheese, wild boar stew, creek, ravioli gratin, nougat, chestnut ice cream and local wines will delight the most demanding taste buds.
Finally, Salavas is best known for its water activities and white-water sports, thanks to the presence of the Ardèche and several rivers. The Rieusset canyon in particular, a tributary of the Ardèche, is the ideal place for thrilling activities such as rafting or canyoning: with its built-in basins, water holes and waterfalls, the place is absolutely magnificent! What could be more obvious than to opt for a canoe or kayak trip in the Ardèche during your stay? It is the queen activity by definition in the Ardèche sector! With family or friends, know that you can descend the Ardèche from the banks and beach of Salavas, on routes ranging from 8 to 37 kilometres for the most courageous. You can also opt for horseback rides in the river, long relaxing sessions on the beach of Salavas or those of neighbouring municipalities such as Balazuc and Vallon-Pont-d'Arc.
