The town of Tarascon-sur-Ariège is located in the department of Ariège, in the Occitanie region. Situated on both sides of the Ariège river from which it takes its name, the town is divided into two distinct parts, the lower and the upper town, one located at the confluence of the Vicdessos and the Ariège, and the second leaning against a mound, formerly fortified. At the crossroads of valleys, the city of Tarascon-sur-Ariège is today essentially turned towards tourism, and has become over the years a destination of choice for history lovers and more particularly for lovers of medieval heritage. Here, history abounds and the sites to discover are numerous! What to see? The small stone streets, the covered houses, the fountains with their melodious lapping in the rue des Remparts, the beauty of the rue du Barry, the Porte d'Espagne, the half-timbered houses... But the church of Sarbat is a must-see of your stay, no doubt about it. Located just at the entrance of the Vicdessos valley, this pre-Romanesque building reveals magnificent stained glasses of the XIIIth century. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Daurade church and its wallpapers from the French Revolution, but also the Château de Lacombe, the Maison de Jehan-Séré and the Tour Saint-Michel are all listed monuments that you will have the opportunity to discover while walking through the streets of the village. The Saint-Michel Tower is really worth a visit: located in the old center, a village heart full of charming alleys and arcades like the Lacaussade Gate, this tower is one of the oldest vestiges of Tarascon-sur-Ariège, just like the Castella Tower which offers a unique view from its promontory! Formerly fortified, the town also has some remains of its ancient ramparts, which you can admire while strolling through the town! For a trip even further back in time, the Grotte de Lombrives is a must: with its rich protohistoric past, it hosts many shows, dinners and concerts, for an unforgettable cultural trip! And the Park of Prehistory not far away is also worth the detour: classified in the Great sites of Midi-Pyrénées, this vast park-museum totally dedicated to Prehistory will reveal you life-size reproductions of parietal sets, prehistoric works, and will lead you on the tracks of the discovery of the fire, the tools and the shooting with the assegai.

Tarascon-sur-Ariège is also the perfect place for activities such as hiking in the heart of the Pyrenees, along the river, or for water sports. For that, go to the Base Nautique Téléski of Mercus-Garrabet just north of the village! The access to the site is free and you will be able to play beach volleyball, enjoy a sandy beach, swim in the Ariège river, do water skiing, paddle, pedal boat, picnic...
