20 kilometres north of Narbonne, the small village of Argeliers is located in the department of Aude, on the border with Hérault, in the Occitanie region. About thirty minutes from the Mediterranean beaches, this charming village has everything to please holidaymakers looking for a change of scenery and a holiday along the water.

Ah, how beautiful is the small town of Argeliers! Nestling at the foot of the first hills of the Narbonne plain, it is one of those places that you want to keep just for yourself. Both intimate and friendly, this Minervois town is known to have been one of the starting points of the revolt of the winegrowers of the Midi, in 1907. A gourmet land, the town is therefore renowned for its wine, but also for its gourmet gastronomy which seduces the palate of young and old alike. In your plates, the specialities come from the Minervois, the Aude, Béziers and Narbonne, you can enjoy fougasse with chips, pélardon, fricandeau, small pâtés from Pézenas, mussels, hake, sardinade, Montagne Noire cochonnailles, olives, cassoulet, and wines from the Corbières or the Minervois (of course!).

Apart from its gourmet side, what attracts people to Argeliers is its authenticity. Here, life seems sweet and calm, and the old alleyways decorated with ochre-coloured houses tirelessly invite the visitor to get lost in its pleasant built heritage. In Argeliers, there are no major infrastructures, no large shopping centre, and you like to take the time to stroll through the heart of the town to the rhythm of the covered passages and narrow streets in the direction of the Place des Cathares and the Marcelin Albert alley, to discover its small shops and do your shopping. Inhabited since the first centuries of our era, the town retains some vestiges of its past, such as its ancient ramparts, the Porte de la Calade topped by an imposing Clock Tower of the 12th century, and the Argeliers seigniorial castle (17th century) located rue du Portail Saint-Vincent.

A site to see in particular? Port-Argeliers of course! Situated on the Canal du Midi which waters the town to the east, it welcomes throughout the year (but especially in summer) barges of travellers passing through the village and holidaymakers who criss-cross the Canal du Midi. The banks of the Canal du Midi are also ideal for walking and cycling, and whether you are on foot, by bicycle or on the canal by barge or boat, you can set off to discover the magnificent villages crossed by the Canal. The Pont-Canal de la Cesse, the locks of Cesse and Truilhas are particularly worth seeing, but you can also reach the towns of Narbonne and Béziers respectively located 20 and 26 kilometres from the heart of the village of Argeliers. Finally, the beaches of Saint-Pierre-La-Mer (and the Gouffre de l'Œil-Doux), Narbonne-Plage and Gruissan are only a thirty-minute drive away, so it would be a shame not to enjoy them for a few moments under the legendary Mediterranean sun! Lazing around, swimming, sailing, scuba diving, paddling, sea kayaking, jet-skiing, bodyboarding, jet-skis and other water activities will complete your stay in the South of France!
