At the foot of the Montagne Noire, in the heart of Cathar country, Caunes-Minervois is peacefully blossoming on the banks of the Argent Double. 21 kilometres north-east of Carcassonne, this land of history has many invitations to come and discover its most beautiful faces.

Overlooking the Minervois plain, Caunes-Minervois sees its history going back to ancient times. Although texts found during excavations attest to its existence as early as the Neolithic period, it is above all the Roman period which has left its mark on the appearance of the village. Authentic, magnificent, the village of Caunes-Minervois is almost poetically structured around its Benedictine abbey. Founded in the year 780, this splendid abbey-church is well worth a visit. After passing through its wide open portal on the town side, one enters the abbey to discover an 11th century Romanesque chevet, a crypt which reveals the remains of the primitive church, a fantastic marble and an 18th century cloister in the Maurist style which hides in its lower part a gallery of the first cloister built at the end of the 12th century. A place of procession, it nowadays hosts comic book exhibitions during the summer period! For an unforgettable discovery combining contemporary culture and the sacred that will delight the whole family.

For a cultural visit, head for the "Marble and Terroir" ecomuseum, which will reveal the secrets of the vine and local production, and will plunge you into the heart of the history of the treasure of Caunes-Minervois: its marble. The red marble of Caunes, which comes from quarries located in the village, was very much appreciated by the Romans and is nowadays found on many splendid monuments, from Fontainebleau to Versailles, including the Invalides, the Carrousel, Marly, the Louvre and the Opera, not forgetting the Abbey of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul in Caunes-Minervois.

Take the time to get lost in the heart of old Caunes to discover the old cobbled streets with their 15th and 18th century facades, the Place de la République and its two listed trees, mullioned windows, carved wooden lintels, ornate knockers, wash houses, houses made of old stones decorated with pastel-coloured windows, Renaissance hotels and wash houses and fountains which, with their lapping, disturb the silence of the town. It is impossible during this walk to miss the Hôtel d'Alibert known for its magnificent courtyard, the Hôtel Sicard with its beautiful windows, or the remains of the fortified wall that once surrounded the heart of the village. On foot, by mountain bike or even on donkey back, head for the Roman Bridge which spans the river L'Argent Double, and the north-east of the village for a nice walk towards the church Notre-Dame du Cros, located near a spring. In addition to its historical and sacred side, this country walk will also take you to the Cros gorges, a geological canyon well known to climbing fans who meet there in good weather. The visit of Carcassonne, the Limousis Cave and the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea 1 hour away will complete your stay under the sun of the Occitan region!
