A small village in the Aude on the border with the Hérault, Escales is located 28 kilometres from Narbonne and about 40 minutes from the Mediterranean coast. With its unspoilt nature, its old stones and its sunny location, it is the ideal place for a relaxing break with the family.

Halfway between Carcassonne and the beaches of Gruissan, Escales nestles in the hills of the Canton of Lézignan. Established on an important ancient crossroads, the village has long lived from the work of the vine. During these holidays, you will have the opportunity to taste the flavours of the local grape varieties, such as Corbières supérieur, a red AOC wine, the pride of the inhabitants of Escales. Aude is renowned for its rich and gourmet cuisine, and Escales is no exception to the rule: in addition to tasting local wines, we strongly recommend that you visit the village's small restaurants and surrounding hamlets for a dip into regional culinary traditions. On the menu? Sardinade, brasucade of mussels, cassoulet with duck confit, marrons glacés, grilled fish, delicatessen from the Montagne Noire, dry liver, fougasse with chips, snails in Languedoc style, sausage, apple crunch... We grant you this, nothing healthy on paper, but it's the holidays, so it would be a shame to deprive yourself!

A gourmet cure, Escales is also a historic village, characterized by a marked and charming architecture. To discover it as it should be, we recommend you to choose hiking or cycling through the alleys of its charming village. But what to see? The church of Saint-Martin, classified as a Historic Monument, is worth a visit, as is the Romanesque Tower of Escales, a square tower split by wide loopholes that reaches the village from its 100 metres high. Continue your discovery of the riches of Escales by going to the spring (also known as the "Fontaine de Goltron"), without forgetting a detour to the Château d'Escales, an old residence of the Viscount of Narbonne (in 1231), and the old hospital of Saint Jaumes. The surroundings of Escales are not without interest, and will be perfect hiking sites for walkers, novices and experienced alike. During these excursions along the meanders of the Aude, you will cross several sites on your way, including locks, such as the Aiguille lock, the Argens lock, and the Ognon lock. The Pont-canal de l'Argent-Double is also an unmistakable landmark: recognizable by its many arches, it crosses the Argentent-Double River and allows the Canal du Midi to cross the latter.

Finally, it is known that in the Aude, summer heat can sometimes be overwhelming. Escales was only about forty kilometres from the beaches of the Mediterranean, it will be easy for you to get there in a few minutes for some beautiful refreshing dives. The seaside resort of Gruissan has a well-equipped nautical base, from which you can practice a wide range of sliding activities: speedboat, jet ski, towed buoy, sea outings, paddle, canoe, kitesurf, sea kayak, surf, sailboat, catamaran, windsurf, windsurf, flyboard... Something to delight the whole family !
