In the south of the Aude department, perched at an altitude of 300 metres, the small green resort of Quillan is offering many invitations to stay within its walls. A change of scenery, dynamic and cultural, this little green Eden in the heart of the mountains is definitely the perfect place for a family holiday.

Quillan, the tourist capital of the Upper Aude Valley, is a municipality in the Cathar country on the right bank of the Aude river. Every year, it seduces lovers of heritage, beautiful stones and preserved nature. A cultural land, Quillan is easily discovered on foot or by bicycle: during these walks, you will not miss the typical charm of this city marked by centuries of history. Start with Quillan Castle: built in the 12th century by the Archbishops of Narbonne, this building, a military fortification responsible for guarding the Spanish border, impresses by its dimensions. From the rue du Château (oldest rue de Quillan), you will find the castle ramp, a pedestrian path that will allow you to access the building if you wish to visit it, which we strongly recommend, especially to be able to enjoy very beautiful views of the surrounding mountains from its high towers. Going down into the heart of the village, you will appreciate the beauty of the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame, which also dates back to the 12th century: with its high bell tower shaped like a square tower perched at more than 30 metres, this imposing building is one of the most visited places in Quillan. Walk along Place Raoul towards Boulevard Jean Jaurès to discover the old fortified walls of the bastide, pass by the 18th century Town Hall, Place de la République, and finally take the time to stroll along the Quai du Pouzadou, whose banks are particularly suitable for walking along the Aude river.

In addition to its undeniable historical charm, Quillan is a green destination, ideal for outdoor activities. Our advice? Drive into the Saint-Bernard Park. A true haven of freshness in the heart of the city, its two bodies of water make it a must for water sports fans who can enjoy a wide range of activities according to their desires. Two shaded beaches will allow you to relax on hot summer days, when the pool on the right bank of the Saint-Bernard is perfect for swimming. The basin on the left bank is totally dedicated to water sports: kayaking, paddle, fishing, jet-skiing, surfing, sailing, you can practice all the activities of your dreams. In addition, the water bodies are equipped to allow sports enthusiasts to give free rein to their desires: you can jog, hike or even mountain bike thanks to nearly 4 kilometres of equipped trails. Are you a whitewater sports enthusiast? The Quillan slalom pool is for you. Located on a wide bend in the middle of the Aude, it will satisfy canoe or kayak lovers thanks to its large waves.

Finally, while passing through the Aude Pyrenees, take the opportunity to visit some of its most beautiful sites: hike to the magnificent Château de Puilaurens, to the Magdala Tower in Rennes-le-Château, or even to Lake Puivert. Climb the Gorges de l'Aude, and take the opportunity to visit Carcassonne or Perpignan, two emblematic cities in the Occitania region.
