Need a family vacation? Direction Sigean, in the heart of the Narbonnaise Regional Park in the Mediterranean. With its famous animal reserve, its high level of sunshine and its direct proximity to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Aude, Sigean has everything to please young and old alike.
Ponds, dazzling lagoons, pink flamingos and sunshine, these are just a few words that perfectly summarize what you will find when you go to Sigean. In the heart of the Gulf of Lions, bordering the Bages-Sigean pond, this city, occupied since ancient times, impresses many visitors every year thanks to the variety of its landscapes. While walking along the banks of the Berre, you will discover the remains of the oppidum of Pech Maho perched on the heights of a small limestone hill. Classified as a Historical Monument, this oppidum, now destroyed, is the oldest witness to the rich history of Sigean. The Roman Way is also one of the ancient remains of the town, you can follow the paths that snake today in the heart of the vineyards that surround Sigean. By taking the time to stroll through Sigean, you will inevitably cross the path of its thick old wall, pierced by three high gates: the Porte de Souvannes (to the south), the Tour Saint-Félix and the Porte fortifiée Saint-Antoine. You will also see its new fountain which was used to water the animals during the transhumance, but also the house called "du Roy" remarkable with its old clear stones, the splendid square of the church and its arcades in warm colours, as well as the square of the Town Hall. Go through the Grand'rue, the rue du Petit Sel, and the avenue de Narbonne to finally discover the castle of Sigean.
But Sigean's major asset is undoubtedly its "natural" side. Bordered by the Corbières massif, the village has a nautical base on its lake, the Port-Mahon nautical base. In an absolutely magnificent setting with the mountains as a backdrop, you can practice a wide range of activities according to your desires: optimist, catamaran, windsurfing, canoe or kayak will satisfy young and old. You can also hike along the trails around the lake through the fragrant scrubland, or go to Île de l'Aute and observe many birds that have made their home in the pond, such as the cormorants and pink flamingos, emblematic of the region. As a family, we strongly recommend a visit to the Sigean African Reserve: a mecca for the protection of endangered species, this reserve on the edge of the ponds is home to more than 900 mammals, as well as 600 reptiles and 2000 birds living in semi-liberty. A car tour and a walking tour will allow you to meet the ostriches, antelopes, chimpanzees, lions, pelicans, camels, zebras, bears and cheetahs that inhabit this reserve. Count 32€ for adult admission and 22€ for child admission.
Finally, it is impossible to stay in Sigean without mentioning the sea, so close to the town. The beaches of Gruissan, Leucate and Port-la-Nouvelle will undoubtedly be the setting for your sand castle competitions and other idleness sessions under the sun. You can also windsurf, catamaran, SUP ("Stand Ip Paddle"), kitesurf, kayak, jet-ski, flyboard or even be towed on inflatable buoys.
