How about a holiday in the sunny region of Avignon? Where history, culture, nature and gastronomy will be the order of the day? Then pack your bags and head for Barbentane!

Clinging to the northern slopes of the Montagnette massif, the village of Barbentane stretches out to the green plains of the northern Bouches-du-Rhône, bordering the Rhône and the Durance. Just south of Avignon, in the heart of a region rich in both historical and natural heritage, Barbentane is a real gem. On the slopes of the Montagnette massif, this medieval town boasts a rich heritage, set in the heart of thick ancient fortifications. Here, the light-coloured houses are adorned with shutters in pastel or bright colours, which stand out and give the village a special charm. The narrow, winding streets climb relentlessly towards one of the village's landmarks: the Angelica Tower. From its 40 meters high, this large keep of the episcopal castle dates from 1365; classified as a historical monument, it reveals from its top, accessible after climbing 140 steps, an absolutely crazy panorama on the village, the rivers and the surrounding mountains. In the village of Barbentane, you will also discover the classical style Château de Barbentane, nicknamed the Petit Trianon du Soleil, and considered the most Italian of the castles of Provence. Our advice? Take the time to get lost in the streets of the old village! You will discover the rue de Séquier from the Lower Middle Ages with its mullioned windows, the Planet district, the underground passages under the Parc d'Andigné, or the rue de la Clastre, which in the past could only be used by donkeys. In terms of religious heritage, it is impossible to miss the unique beauty of the Romano-Gothic church of Notre-Dame-de-Grâces, which is worth a look for its decorations, its square bell tower and its interior architecture. The 17th century town hall and its 250 kilo bell, the remains of the ramparts, the Porte Calendrale and the Porte de Séquier, both fortified, but also the conciergerie of the Château d'Audigné in the Grand Rue will not fail to amaze lovers of old stones. The semi-troglodytic dwellings, the 16th and 17th century houses such as the Maison des Chevalier, not forgetting the three mills in the village will complete your typically Provencal visit.

On foot or by bike, you can take advantage of your stay in Barbentane to discover some of the emblematic destinations of Provence, such as Avignon, the famous City of the Popes, but also Tarascon and its splendid Abbey of Saint-Michel de Frigolet, or even Saint-Rémy-de-Provence And if the Rhône and the Durance are perfect companions for summer walks, note that they are also perfect for river trips by boat or canoe!

Finally, a stay in Barbentane would not be complete without discovering the flavours of the country. The taffy or the famous Barbentane fig are all specialities that visitors like to taste in the shade of the plane trees or on the terrace of a restaurant. Cheeses, Avignon wines, tomatoes, cherries, garlic, strawberries, olive oil, lavender, papaline d'Avignon, croustade, daube, papeton d'aubergines, Crespeou and other Provencal delights will delight the taste buds of young and old alike.
