It is in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône that the village of Tarascon takes place. Typical of Provence, this cultural and historical town has many sites to visit, grandiose and fascinating, which will not fail to delight lovers of beautiful stones and holidays in the open air.

Watered by the meanders of the Rhone, Tarascon is in the heart of a magnificent region, lulled by the song of the cicadas and the accent of its inhabitants. Neighbouring Fontvieille and Les Baux-de-Provence, 17 kilometres from Arles in the south and 23 kilometres from Avignon in the north, the town of Tarascon seduces for its ideal location in the middle of fertile plains, marked by the traditions of the country. First thing to do when you arrive in Tarascon: leave your car in the garage. Thanks to its footpaths and wide streets, the town is easily visited on foot. An essential stage of this visit is the Castle of King René, also called Castle of Tarascon. Located in place of a Roman castrum and a fortress whose role was to protect the border of Provence, this absolutely magnificent castle decorated by René d'Anjou is certainly one of the most beautiful medieval castles in France. Massive and imposing, this castle flanked by round towers on the town side and square towers on the river side impresses by its crenellated walls 48 meters high overhanging the Rhone. A city surrounded by legends, Tarascon can be discovered like a book of thrilling stories. One of the main legends surrounds the collegiate church of Saint Martha: the story says that Saint Martha, landing from Palestine, would have bravely tamed La Tarasque, a huge amphibious monster. For centuries now, many pilgrims have come to pay homage to her in the collegiate church, located near King René's Castle. The other story, everyone knows it, is that of the Tartarin tale of Tarascon, a famous character born from the poetic pen of Alphonse Daudet in 1872, honoured every year during the medieval Festivals of Tarasque which take place in June. While visiting the heart of the town, you can discover a house dedicated to Alphonse Daudet, as well as old buildings with arcades decorated with elegant flowers, notably on the side of the Rue des Juifs, the covered street Arc de Boqui, or the Rue des Halles. Also pass by the 1648 town hall, the cloister of Cordeliers, the Antre de la Tarasque, not forgetting a little further on the chapel Saint-Gabriel in Provençal Romanesque style, and the abbey Saint-Michel-de-Frigolet on the road to Boulbon.

The other pride of Tarascon, it slips easily into suitcases and will make beautiful gifts to those you love: it is the Souleïado! Famous fabric fashioned for centuries in Tarascon, it is one of the typical products of the folklore of Provence, and its museum, housed in a magnificent 14th century mansion, is worth a visit for its collection of fabrics and boards dating from the 18th century!

Between Camargue, Alpilles and Montagnette, Tarascon is a delight for lovers of hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Thanks to numerous marked out itineraries, you will be able to leave to the discovery of all that Provence has of more beautiful. Châteaurenard and the ruins of its castle which offer a unique panorama on the Mont Ventoux, Fontvieille, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Maussane-les-Alpilles, but also Les Baux-de-Provence, cultural Arles, Avignon the famous City of the Popes, without forgetting Nîmes city of traditions, the Camargue and the beaches of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (one hour drive away) are as many magnificent places that you will be able to discover during your stay in Tarascon... To visit, without moderation!
