Situated in the heart of a coastline marked by history, the small town of Commes is the perfect place to put your suitcases if you are looking for a stay combining culture, traditions and nature in Normandy.

In the middle of the D-Day landing beaches, between Arromanches-les-Bains and Omaha Beach, Commes is a small coastal town full of charm. Nine kilometres north of Bayeux, the village's origins go back a long, long way, since the site of Mont Cavalier bears witness to occupation as far back as Prehistory and the Roman era. By visiting the various hamlets of Commes, you will be able to contemplate its entire history, from the large farms of Escures to the Pont Fatu in the direction of Port-en-Bessin, the church village, or the fishermen's hamlet of Le Bouffay. The town centre of Commes is also worth a stroll, which will allow you to discover its 11th century Notre-Dame church, the fortified farmhouse of the church, or the splendid Château du Bosq built on medieval foundations (visible at the level of its moat). The 18th century Château d'Escures is also well worth a short visit, as is the Manoir de Commes Tower (16th century) and the tithe barn.

But the main asset of Commes is its surroundings. Here, there are many walking and cycling routes that will allow you to discover all the richness and splendour of the coast's relief. Our advice? Opt for a short hike on the side of the Mont Cavalier, and the Falaise de Bouffay: from this site, perched on the chalk cliffs that border the sea, you will be able to contemplate marvellous panoramas of the open sea and the Goulette de Vary. A walking site adored by visitors, it is also particularly appreciated for a picnic break with a view, and thrill aficionados will also be able to enjoy free flight and paragliding, for a flight over the village and the coast that promises to be... memorable! In a few kilometres of walking, you can also reach the most famous D-Day landing beaches. The Longues-sur-Mer Battery is a must to do, as are Gold Beach, Juno Beach, Sword Beach to the east, Omaha Beach and Utah Beach to the west.

After these historic visits, how about a refreshing dip in the clear waters of the English Channel? The city doesn't really have any beaches for swimming, but for sunbathing, lazing around and water sports, you can get to the beaches of the nearby seaside resort of Port-en-Bessin in no time at all. At the foot of the port and the Tour Vauban, you will find long white sandy beaches, perfect for breaks under the sun as well as for sandcastle competitions. The amateurs of gliding will be able to paddle, sail, improve their sea kayaking skills, discover the catamaran or the sand yacht... Among others! Finally, golf sessions at the Omaha Beach Golf Course, a visit to the Museum of Underwater Wrecks of the Landing and excursions to Bayeux to discover its cathedral will complete your stay at Commes.
