Between land and sea, Loix is an island on the island, absolutely magnificent. Offering many faces and an immense mosaic of landscapes on its 6720 hectares, Loix is one of the most atypical villages on the Île de Ré. Adjacent to the Fier d'Ars and the salt marshes, this peninsula is bordered by nearly 15 kilometres of a splendid crystalline coastline, offering its visitors a fabulous playground for outdoor sports stays.
With its flowered alleys, its beautiful architectural heritage and its preserved environment, Loix is a resolutely peaceful village, both authentic and relaxing. This is why the city has been certified "Cittaslow", a label that rewards "villages where life is good". During your visits, you will discover everything that makes this city so special. Its typical houses of the Ile de Ré, its small port, its shaded squares and its atmosphere will seduce you in no time! The Tidal Mill is one of the emblematic sites of the municipality: located at the port, in the heart of the fishing district, this tidal mill is the last mill on the island still in working order. Built in the middle of the 18th century to grind wheat to make flour with the power of water, it is now privatized and is not open to visitors. You can still admire it from the street, and take advantage of your visit in this area to push the door of the Écomusée du Marais Salant. You will discover the history of salt-growing, its salt marshes from their origin to their current exploitation. In addition, you will have the opportunity to taste and buy salt, fleur de sel, salicorns, oysters and many other typical local products. The second unmissable site of your stay: Fort de Grouin. Transformed into a dwelling, this remnant of a stocky military fortress dates back to the middle of the 18th century. It is located in the heart of the protected area of the Conservatoire du Littoral, and is renowned for its truly magical panoramas of the ocean. The salt marshes and Sainte-Catherine Church are finally added to the list of things to see during your vacation in Loix.
The ideal way to discover Loix and its surroundings is to opt for walks, cycling or horseback riding according to your wishes. Two cycle paths cross the town, particularly along the coast towards Fier d'Ars, through the salt marshes and vineyards. Finally, in addition to waterfront walks, Loix offers its visitors the opportunity to relax by the sea, thanks to its unique beach: "Plage du Grouin". Nestled at the very end of the peninsula, it is overlooked by the Fort of Grouin. Ideal for family swimming thanks to its gentle slope and calm waters, this beach is also very popular with sports enthusiasts thanks to its many facilities. Bodyboarding, fishing, kite flying, kitesurfing, but also paddle, surfing and sailing will be within reach of young and old with the beach nautical club.
