Halfway between Poitiers and Niort, in the heart of the Deux-Sèvres department and the Pays de Gâtine, Vasles is a peaceful place to settle down for a relaxing stay. Far away, far from the big tourist destinations full of people, this quiet place, watered by the "Beaver River", the Boivre, has many sites to discover. For an optimal visit, nothing beats wearing good sneakers to roam freely in the village. But what to see in Vasles? Rich in a very ancient history, Vasles has several historical remains on its territory, where researchers and enthusiasts have found cut stone tools in a very beautiful state of conservation. For an immersion in history, nothing beats a visit to the ancient site of Sanxay: nestled in the heart of the Vonne valley, this Gallo-Roman site occupied from the 1st to the 4th century AD reveals the city's organisation at that time. You will be able to see old thermal baths, a theatre, but also a sanctuary and old residences leaning against the hillsides. Back in the heart of Vasles, the discoveries do not stop there: in the past, the town had a fortress, as well as a fortified castle protected by thick walls and deep moats, topped by a drawbridge. Now largely destroyed, Château de Vasles has given way to a church and a large public square, where livestock markets were held in the 20th century. You can see the current witnesses by walking along 3 rue Soufflet, just next to the Sainte-Radegonde church: with its red tiled roof, high windows, hexagonal tower and beautiful stone facade, it is impossible to pass by. But the town has other monuments to see during your walks, such as the Manoir chez Paulier (in the place known by the same name), or the magnificent castle of La Sayette: a true 15th century fortified house, this imposing castle was damaged during the Wars of Religion before being finally restored and extended in the 17th century. In addition to being a must for the beauty of its pointed roofs and turrets, this place has four enclosed gardens that emerged from the ground during the Renaissance: a fruit garden, an orchard, a classic garden with high grids and a sundial, and finally a courtyard garden, a place of banter and strolling that has lost none of its beauty over the centuries.

Vasles is also the perfect place to hike: you will find a whole host of itineraries for all your desires, which will take you through its countryside, its hedges, its cereal crops and its livestock. Parthenay, Poitiers, but also Niort will be easily accessible by car, but also by bike for cyclists. With the family? Impossible to miss the "Mouton Village": classified as an LPO refuge, this 6-hectare wooded park shelters more than twenty sheep breeds from all over the world. Young and old will discover many breeds of sheep, but they will also be able to feed the lambs, hens, ducks and goats in the park, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, visit the Wool School and discover the work of the sheepdog.
