Saint-Pompont, also called Saint-Pompon (but how cute is this name, isn't it?), is located in the heart of the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. On the border with the Lot, this small village of less than 400 souls is located in the heart of the Périgord Noir, about thirty kilometers south of Sarlat-la-Canéda. Rich of a very old history as the vestiges of the magdalenian found in caves of the Castle of Castelviel as well as the archaeological sites of the Gallic time attest it, Saint-Pompont is a rural village stuffed with charm and life. Named after Pomponius, a 6th century bishop of Naples, Saint-Pompont has a charming architectural heritage that visitors can't get enough of. Our advice? Forget your car and prefer to travel on foot or by bicycle. You will take the time to discover the old city gate classified as a Historic Monument, as well as the Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Pompont church built in a Romanesque style. The city walls and the Grilloux monument are to be discovered, as well as a beautiful array of castles such as the 12th century Mespoulet Castle, the magnificent and squat Saint-Pompont Castle, or the Castelviel Castle which dominates the Lousse valley from its heights. In the heart of the village, the old hospital of the 13th century, the Roman vestiges, but also the old dwellings, the houses of nobles, the bread ovens, the huts, the wash houses and the mills will complete this postcard decor.

But staying in Saint-Pompont is also an opportunity to discover some of the most emblematic sites of the Dordogne. Villefranche-du-Périgord is worth a visit for its magnificent architecture, as are Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and La Roque-Gageac, which are sure to delight gourmets and dazzle lovers of old stones with their marvelous castles. The Château des Milandes, the Château de Cazenac, the Château de Commarque, Puymartin and the Château de la Roque are also to be added to your list! The Font-de-Gaume cave, the Cro-Bique cave, the Trou de l'Arc, Cognac and Pech Blanc, without forgetting the course of the Dordogne river on which it is good to take a boat or canoe ride, are all things that will make your stay in Saint-Pompont simply unforgettable.
